Boot/luggage rack

Ok i'm thinking of purchasing an original rack from ebay and putting it on the FHC

what i'm thinking is are there any negatives that those with racks have noticed, ie root for rust, wind niose etc

[8 whole cylinders worth of punch to ram the world through the windshield and out the rear view mirror. Car & Driver]

Well John I must say that I don't like the look of the boot rack either, but each to their own!

More to the point I think I am right in saying that you need to drill holes in the boot lid to fit it? Apart from the potential for rust, have you got a spare boot lid to swap over if you decide to take it off in future?

You're not getting a wicker picnic basket to go on it are you?[:p]

Sorry to say I agree with above John

I had this dilemma as I never had enough room in the car when coming down to Billing

I thought of boot rack but went for a tow bar and camping trailer insted

i dont notice wind noise.........
and i used stainless bolts with wing nuts and spring washers so i can easily take it off for polishing the boot lid and re greasing the bolts etc.

It rides again..... and again wehey!!!!!!!

You'd have to constantly pay attention to the holes to make sure the touch up paint wasn't chipped so rust could start. It would make the boot lid heavier. Does it tweak the lid a bit (as the stay is on one side only)?. Friends boot lid is tweaked by stay not releasing when he put it down once and sits proud on LH side. Wonder if it would happen just from the extra weight of the rack as it's put up and down or just resting up.

I have enough room in my trunk for suitcase, cooler, tent, ground sheet, air mattress, pump, sleeping bag, my car show display sign, box of cleaning products, wax, etc. (for prepping car for show after a 470 Km. trip) spare oil, water/antifreeze jug, tools. What are you packing that I'm not?[:p]

To each their own, but I happen to like the look of a luggage rack on the wedge.
For me, it gives it a bit of an English Car look... go figure

Since it was one of the original option accessories (at least for a NA sold Wedge) it's one of
those things you just have to have to have (is that a legit sentence?!) a complete Wedge...
Got one on both our Wedges + a spare hole-less lid for my dhc that I NEVER use.
Don't forget to seal the holes with soft siliconrubber washers on both sides!

They make the lid fall onto the rear of your head some times (if the gas struts aren't up to it)
and they don't take a load (forget the idea of anything heavier than that traditional wicker
picnic basket!) so they are really not a good idea - but the make the car look sooo 'period'

- and did I say original option accessory? [8D]

I like the look. Mine's been on the car since new and there is no rust. I have had it off a few times to do a thorough polish. Mine is just fastened with stainless sheet metal screws. I just put a dab of silicone on each time I replace it. I also have a spare lid that I put on the car once but didn't like it. Looked too plain. I plan to find a suitable (very subtle) spoiler to add to it then try it again.
Can't say that I ever use it though. Maybe 2x in 22 years.
Wind noise? Who can tell with the roar of the engine! [:D]

A good alternative to a bootrack is something called a Bootbag, this is simply a bag, sitting on a mat, strapped onto the boot with 3 straps. Can assure you they are perfect for a motoring holiday, and dont budge an inch, even between Norfolk and Le Mans. You just simply remove and carry like a holdall. They dont mark the boot at all.
