Steering Wheels

Postby prlee » 27 Feb 2011 13:59

I was wondering what different steering wheels people have?

I have the standard late TR7 steering wheel, I am generally happy with it, but I dont like the thin plastic rim. I have a 13" Mountney wheel which I cleaned up and tried this weekend, it has a nice chunky grip but is smaller than the original and less dished so I couldn't operate the headlamp flash properly without bending the stork which I ddin't want to do.

I would like a chunky leather grip on a 14" diameter.

I am thinking about fitting one of the Halfords leather covers, did this on the Spitfire and am not really happy with it.

I'd stick to the 14" leather covered wheel as the 13" TR8 wheel on the Spider blocks the flasher lights on the instrument panel at my height so I have to duck my head down see if they have switched of as traffic noise often blocks out the clicking of the flasher unit. Besides that the 13" smaller diameter makes it tougher in the parking lot with it's smaller mechanical advantage.

I'll second the observation that the 13" steering wheel is a bother. I can't see the indicator without ducking, either. More than once I've been following my brother-in-law and wondering why he keeps turning on his right turn signal, then his left, then his right, etc. It eventually dawns on me that my signal hasn't self cancelled after a merge or a gentle turn.

yet my tall friend Phil (6 ft 5 in) likes the 13 inch factory "Moto-lita" wheel because he can get in easier and his knees don't squish like they do under the original 14 inch steering wheel...

Other than it blocking the signal indicator, I do rather like the thick-rimmed 13 inch wheel in my car. Perhaps I'll try Odd's solution.

my 13.25" e bay wheel $19.US I actually like the fact that it is flatter. puts my short fingers closer to the stalks. I have not noticed any problems with viewing anything on the dash. A bit more effort is required but I can't honestly say it is noticable.

Some will not like it but I do. It's such and easy thing to change anyway. Some may complain that it is not not original but hey...If I want to go to a points event where that maters what is fifteen minutes to swap back the original wheel??

I'm 6'3" and I like the original 13" wheel. It makes it easier to get in and out of the car. Okay, so I can't see the signal indicators, I replaced the original flasher unit with a solid state one. It also makes a loud, solid clicking sound that can be heard over my loud car.

I do like the wheel that Mark has too though. I wonder if you could get it in green?

I think for the moment I will put a leather glove on the standard wheel and try to do a better job than on the Spitfire. Maybe later get it done professionaly.

Don

From memory I think it was the only size I could find. I actually ordered it 2 1/2yrs ago for a Honda Civic. I already had a Momo hub adapter and hoped it would fit, at worst I figured it was only $19. and I could hang it on the wall as a decoration or make a clock or something. It was available in a whole bunch of different colors also. I can't remember who the seller was and it was a while ago so it is no longer in my purchase history, or I can't find it anyway. I know it originally had an MPH horn button but I had one from an old Nardi wood wheel with the Triumph badge in it so I used it. If I have the time or maybe I should say "if I take the time" some day I'll make up a nice TR7 centre for it with some clear acrylic and lettering.
