LS1 in a TR7?

Postby TriumphCMT » 16 Dec 2010 07:31

Does anybody know if a LS1 engine (5.7L corvette/camaro motor) will fit in a TR7?

If so, has it been done?

Check on you tube . Search; tr7, paddle shift, ls1, or lt1.
You will find your answer there.
Do you know what these engines weigh?
Good luck

I would think the V-6 turbo would be better. Both would have more than enough power unless you're drag racing possibly. V-6 Turbo would have better gas milage. Kits are available so you don't have to make up parts. I would guess the V-6 is lighter. The V-6 would have better balance as the weight is more towards the rear. More space is engine bay, especially in front of motor.

Lexus quad cam.
Cheap motor, ultra reliable and a sound of it's own.
Rodney Wells did a big write up on it in this forum. Very impressive.
Check it out
Cheers

don't bet on the v6 turbo being lighter by any significant amount. If you are talking about the Buick v6 it is a cast iron block while the LS engines that come out of cars are mostly, if not all, aluminum. The LS used in trucks is going to be an iron block if I remember correctly. As far as kits go you can go to GM Performance and order just the engine computer or an engine and computer combo to swap it into an older car, and several companies will have motor mounts for doing LS swaps. Gas mileage may be a little worse but if you are building a car for gas mileage you are better off sticking to the four banger as even a turbo car will get bad mileage when you use the loud peddle a lot.

I don't have weight information but don't forget the Buick engine is of small size. I've seen the Buick next to the same displacement Chevy V-6 and it's about 2/3 to 3/4 the size. Chevy is not known for it's economy of material be it irom or aluminum.

I haven't found the weight of the v6 yet but according to info on the web the bare LS1 block weighs about 160 lbs and a full dressed engine and trans are about 460 lbs. I don't know how accurate that info is so I guess we will have to keep guessing. I still believe if it was me I would rather have the LS1 because of the power gain and the fact that these days it is probably easier to find a LS in good condition over a RWD V6.
