I have a ceiling-mounted heater just like Dave's. Together with fairly good insulation, I can warm up the garage pretty easily even in our current 0 to 10 (f) weather. If I had it to do over again though, I would run hot water tubing through the floor slab, 'cause it's always chilly down there.

My garage is in 2 parts . The original area,about 650 sq., built with the house in 94 that is insulated. Then I added 700 sq. to it in about 2001. The new section is fully insulated with gas to it. I struggled for a couple of years deciding on a Hot Dawg style heater or an Infrared unit. I decided on the infrared unit so I wouldn't have to listen to the fan blow.
If I stay in this house past this winter I will sell the infrared unit and go to the Hot Dawg one.
Infrared is nice it just takes to long

At least he was able to get out of the car, I had to push my car into the garage if I didn't want to live in it till I went out again[:D]
Now I have some space (even more when the pole comes out) just need some heating, I have been waiting near on 6 weeks for my door that was supposed to be 2 weeks, could have done with it [:(!] Its freezing out there[}:)]

I have overhead heating, it's called the roof.

It is a rare day here, even in winter, when the temperature doesn't struggle up to at least 20 C.

My "garage is a steel frame single skin corrugated iron roof & clad shed, with about a 2 inch air gap between the top of the walls, & the overhanging roof.

Even in the middle of winter, it gets too hot inside to hand polish a car, without breaking out into a sweet. I do most of my work outside, in the fresh air, in the shade of a tree.

Well I have a bit of a selection that I use dependant on how cold it is.

This is my extreme temperature increase device!




After 5 minutes of this, even on its lowest setting I can see a 10 to 15 degree celcius temperature increase. It then get's a bit too hot and I switch it off and run this just to maintain the temp:





If it starts to cool off, I just run the big one for a few mins again.

If it isn't that cold, I just use the small heater, or a combination of the small heater and this infrared one:





I tend to use this one more if I'm not moving about much, maybe doing a lathe or bench job.

It rarely gets below freezing here, but even then it doesn't get below 50F in my garage. The furnace and hot water heater put off some heat and the bedrooms are directly overhead. If it gets a bit cold I take the Subaru for a drive and when I come back the heat from it's engine warms the garage up nicely.

My garage isn't heated but I stay warm with a set of trusted thermal overalls.........They're useless above 10c as I get far too hot.

We get much the same weather Don, That "cold" spell you speak of froze the water in the garden hose for a few days (had to take off the nozzle) but everythings back to nornmal with rain and mid 40's +. People on the praries and back east would call that "cold spell" a welcoming precursor to Spring.[:D]

Stop it guys - you're making me envious.

I'd love to be able to go out to the workshop all rugged up and have a nice enamel mug full of hot tea to warm the fingers when they feel a bit numb.

It was in the low 30s C last time and the humidity was above 90%. I drip with sweat all over my tools and what I'm working on. The sun glares and if I work outside without a hat my head starts to feel like it will explode.

It got up to 10 (f) here today. Don, Merv, & Jim, you guys in the Northwest don't know what cold is! I would still rather have this than your rain that I grew up with, though.

It was 6 degrees (F) here this morning, so I have not any interest in activities outside. I love the fresh snow, but only from my window looking out.
I have been known to go work on the car, flip on the TV in the garage, and fall asleep on the creeper under the car with a beer only inches away.
Working on the car often isn't really the point, I'm sure you all understand... It's a guy thing!
Now my wife comes to the garage and does her FaceBook thing on my computer out there. I guess we're bonding [8D]
