What about a Carbon Fibre prop shaft?

I just saw this accessory on a video covering the Nissan Skyline R33 and R34. Apparently it really aids acceleration and reduces weight a lot.

hi jolyon,

well, i can make a propshaft but really nobody is going to formula 1 nor would anyone want to spend the money. you can ruduce weight on so many other parts. also the shaft really isnt that long to make that much of a difference. hey, if someone wants to send me money to make one i will be more than happy, by far it wont be cheap. its not the pretty stuff you see on the hoods. its usually a uni plain black prepeg carbon.
happy turkey day

hmm carbon fiber propshaft? Now that would be a challenge. Especially fiber to metal cv joints interface. Not to mention strength and stiffness of the whole assembly.

nellotinnirello do you have access to adequate machinery to fabricate molds or molds are coming off the metal parts themselves?

i can tool up for any project as long as it doesnt require an autoclave. i have a small autoclave where i could do it, but i would use up all my prepeg carbon which is pricy to get even in large amounts. if someone really wants me make one its going to cost. there are places already tooled up for that so they would make a carbon or aluminum propshaft cheaper.
even though the tensile strength in carbon is better than steel it still will break.

i am thinking about it now i would rather spend time making a mold for a doors. you can save more weight getting rid of those pig heavy doors than a driveshaft.

Check out this car. Looks well done. Front is a litle too different than original for me, but I do like the rear.
1st link is pics and the 2nd has a small description of what he used.

hey craig,

i agree the front is questionable, but thats my opinion. the back looks nice and it really flows nice. im glad someone is putting effort in a 7, better than a civic.

i picked up a front air dam at the bone yard for the right price, which i will use for my more modern look version.
it was an after market air dam off of a carrola. its kinda jap racer, but i plan on chopping majority of it up. my idea is to have it bolt up to the bumper im going to make. so i actually plan on making 2 versions of air dams. one boy racer the other more conservative. ill put some pics tomorrow and im still working on the bumpers. i have lots of projects.

Re the above car, hey, if you want to turn a TR7 into a Fiero why don't you just buy a Fiero. You can get it as a V-6 and it's mid engine. Don't see the point. The TR7 has a unique look about it that only responds to mild modification, not to say it couldn't be improved upon but most modifications I see make it look more like other cars on the road rather than an improvement in what's there. Harris Mann's personal sketches on what he would have liked to see the TR7 turned into when modernized (next generation) are the direction to go but haven't seen anyone go there.

Agree with you Spyder.
I'm not fussed on the front end, and the rear end just looks too heavy to me [V].

NT: I forgot where I got this, but here is West Virginia site (of all places!!). TR7-MG-etc. fiberglas fabricators. Shows lots of products and photos.
I liked their design approach to rear bumper. Notice the top edge parallel to ground, wheel to wheel, very simple: Doesn't have "Tokyo Drift" teenage Civic look [btw, "Jap" is racist word in English] Anyway, don't care for the W VA fronts, but you might get some ideas...
You didn't like my nerf bar idea[8D] ??. But I live close to the city, and have fear of SUV parking damage. Maybe removable nerfs...

The original sketch shown above is his initial idea before it got to mock up stage. I like it, truly unique, I like the reverse slope of top better than production coupe. After production was under way he did a sketch on his own time (not commissioned) where it showed where he thought the direction the TR7 should go on it's next generation body style. This was in the DVD Project Bullet as Craig said. It also is very nice, more modern without looking like "all the rest".
