Yes, it is in the last 700, there were quite a few unused numbers so it could be even nearer the end. The 82 model year cars were really 81s re numbered to comply with Canadian rules at the time.
The last UK spec FHC wasnt in the last 150 cars built.

Chris,

Thanks once again for your replies and the information regarding the build date.

Out of curiosity, why was there such a gap in cars being produced i.e. 408527 built on 10/10/81 and 408534 6 days later?

I would have assumed the factory would have one continuous run until it was over. Was there some shortage of workers whilst the line was being re-tooled for another vehicle etc.?

Best regards,

Andrew

I think it was a shortage of parts. Also cars with earlier chassis numbers were being built, the cars werent built in order.

Chris, the info you know makes interesting reading. My car is also near to the end of production but not as near as the others. Its a fixed head in silver leaf 407690. Don't suppose you know its build date too? It was'nt registered until July '82. This is such an interesting forum.

This would be my car. Personnaly I'd describe it as scruffy rather than rough, it has a current MOT which it passed with no problems or advisories, it's done a couple of miles since. It's had a lot of new panels and some of the welding is untidy and it has a rattlecan paint job. Unfortunatly the intersted party has postponed collecting and paying for it a number of times over the last month and today informed me five minutes before he was supposed to be here that he's not having it after all.Having held it for him without a deposit and turned down several other offers as a result to say that I'm cross is an understatement. It may well be up for sale again next week if anyone is interested

I find this very intriguing, chassis numbers always seem to hold the key to a cars birth, well I think so, I was more interested to see a lot of build dates for the 40800 numbers up at round 10.10.81 etc, so out of curiosity I checked my chassis number, 208186 the first reg date says 13.10.81, does this mean that my car to was subject to parts shortages[?]
I wonder what parts they could have been waiting for[:p]
I do know what it didn't receive[V] A V8 engine[:0] Nor Sprint engine[:(!] Could have it been the pillar mounted seatbelt buckle holders[?][?]
I guess one will never know[:(]

The car is unable to handle my driving capabilities

More likely to have been sitting unsold at a dealership for 12 months.

Mine's a latish car built in June 81 but sat unsold in the dealership until August 82, & even then the dealers only sold it by "doing a good deal" to the original owner. The 2 litre FHCs were not very loved at that time.

The last official advertised selling price in the UK was £6995 for the DHC (alloys were optional) and the FHC was £7295. I doubt whether they ever sold for the full amount.

The car still appeared on BL price lists up to December 1982, By this time Evans Halshaws in Birmingham were advertising the last few heavily discounted at £4995 for the DHC and £4495 for the FHC.

Using RPI, inflation etc, if the car was been sold new today it would cost around £22000.

They weren't particularly cheap cars.

1971 Javelin V8 = $4,200
1977 TR7 = $5,295
1980 TR7 Spider = $13,566
1991 Acura Integra = $14,995

Dollars are Canadian and were applicable converted from US currency using exchange rates of the day. 71 Javelin and 1980 TR7 Spider actual price paid. 1976 TR7 is advertised price and 91 basic Integra discounted price to clear for 92 models. You will note the big jump from 76 to 80 pricing due to pound inflation. The 1980 Spider is almost the same price as Acura 11 years later, very expensive, no wonder they couldn't move them.

My car went out the door of Decarie Motors in Montreal on December 28th 1982 for the sum of 10,032$ + taxes = 10932.70$ CDN

NB, build date Aug 1981 ....so it was definately sitting for a tad ....
