Time for bed?

Well, the road tax is due to run out and the weather's turning for the worst. Am i the first to put the car to bed for the winter?

I have so many plans for the new year, none that the missus will approve of though[:D]

Well, last time I hitched up the oxen to go into town to get supplies (wifespeak for going into town with the TR7) I was chastised for not supporting local merchants. Well I do when the value is there as this picture taken today proves. Weather is great with more to come although it's a little cool and the heater is turned on. Got a wry grin from lady taking a walk (only maddogs and Englishmen go round with top down with it this cool, high 40's F), but when you get the nice days (more to come) in the rain forrest you use them. Time to put it up on jacks for winter projects (muffler, expansion tank, windblocker brackets) will come later. But for now it's more of this:

I've had my car tucked away for a month now..
Insurance ran out so i just garaged it

I got the opportunity to take mine for a spin just last Thursday. I had tried to up the insurance value on the car since the new paint. My agent was fine with the photos I sent but the underwriter wanted the agent to take them. It was a nice day in the 60s and I blasted across the river into Oregon to see my agent. On the way back, stopped at a light, I had a guy pull up next to me shout out "What do you have in that thing?" I'm not even sure he knew what "that thing" was. Regardless, it was nice to be able to take a drive in November.

Bob, I keep mine on the road all year. Plenty of dry and cold days to enjoy through the Winter.
My V8 loves breathing in all that cold air of the Winter months [}:)].
Roof down, hat,gloves and sunglasses, and I'm gone for the day [8D].

We don’t have that horrible business of having to lay up our favourite cars for the winter. That is often the best driving time here in Queensland.

I did have a really cold drive to Bathurst early one winter morning in my Morgan +4, when it was about -5 C in the mountains. In those days it was still legal to drive at 100 MPH in Oz, so the wind was pretty strong. The Morgan with its low cut doors was freezing my kidneys to death, until I remembered stories of tramps using newspapers to keep themselves warm.

I stopped & bought a paper, & with 30 pages stretching from my hip to my arm pit, & from my chest to my back, the problem was solved. Pity about the fresh news print ink coming off all over my shirt, & the inside of my coat, but I still had kidneys when I got to the race meeting.

Why did those older pommy sports cars have such low cut doors, anyway?

My car will stay in occasional use until the first snowfall and a layer of salt is laid down. Hopefully that won't be too soon. Late December perhaps. After that it will be tucked away untill a really good spring rain washes the roads clean of all that nasty TR7 eating stuff.

Mine has been off the road for 3 weeks now Rob,

Not quite had the weather to take her out and when the weather is nice i havn't got the time. [:(]

Now with the engine change it may be a while before she runs again.[:(]

As we had our annual Night rally last weekend I swapped cars, so the DHC is now in the shed while the Sprint is at home under the car port.

I never lay the cars up, I'll take them out for a spin as much as possible, if time and weather allow (no salt please).
I only disconnect the battery, remove the wiper blades and make sure the tyre pressure is somewhat higher.

Took mine off the road on the last day of October to send the tax back for 6 months refund. Only problem is my sons Viva is stuck in the garage in the middle of a suspension rebuild so it has to stay on the driveway under a cover. Typically we had a big storm yesterday and the cover came off despite the ties and elasitcated straps, and it all got well soaked. Will start looking for the new rust when I get the garage back.

I garaged my TR7 last Wednesday in anticipation of a huge rainstorm and the impending winter. The weather forecast looks delightful for the upcoming weekend, however, I might just sneak in one more ride.

far from top down weather here in the QC, but they are announcing nice sun for the rest of the week ......hoping to get some road use out of the car up to the end of the month!

Hi,

Maybe it's just me but i find it so wonderful how we're all local but so many miles apart. FI spyder, that pic sums it up for me. Same car, completely different backdrop. Obviously by owning a BMW and my Land rover i visit the respective forums with a view to saving me a few quid but none seem to have the honesty and friendship that this forum gives. I know it sounds a bit cliche but we really do have "The Best TR7 Forum" on the web.

Anyway, enough of the gayness. No offence if anyone is, well, ahem, you know........

The reason my TR7 is laid up for the winter is because of the lack of rust protection, this will be sorted when it gets dipped and treated. Trekcarbonboy, I'm not too sure about other countries but the british winter, accompanied by the british road salt can ruin a car very quickly. Once she's treated then i will happily use her through the winter. A TR7 in the snow must be very entertaining!

Cspence, I can't remember the last time i saw one of those on the roads here. I remember quite a few years back a friends dad had one and i couldn't believe how quiet it was. In fact so bad was my jealousy that i told my friend that my mums Ford Orion was quicker because it was noisier. I don't think i've changed much[:D]

Stan, you need to set yourself a goal be it a rally, road trip or anything that involves putting money down. Or anything that commits you to a date, the Le-mans trip did it for me. If it wasn't for that i think i'd still have an engine in bits and the poor old car still sat in the garage with no hope of it moving again. Everyone's different, you might be one of the rare few blokes who says "it'll be done by spring" and lo and behold you meet the deadline. I'm not, much to the dismay of my wife!

Jim, i still can't get over those arches and that paintjob. The paint looks deep enough to swim in and i'm sure a quick stab on the throttle is enough to give people an idea as to what's under the hood! You've done a cracking job on that car mate.

Beans, i do the same as you, get those tyre pressures up and remove the battery and stick it on trickle charge. I really want those minilites by the time she's back on the road in the spring, lovely deep dish jobs. Oh and the big brakes etc etc. I really hope the missus doesn't read this!

Right, how to get a TR7 out of my garage.............

I tell the wife i love her, i offer her a cup of tea and chocolate or biscuits and leave it an hour. Then i casually mention the TR7 needs moving[:D]. She has to climb up on my bench, saddle along so her legs can go through the passenger window (i make sure she removes her shoes) and she slides in to start the car up. Full lock left followed by full lock right sees the car clear and able to drive straight out. I don't even have to leave the living room, it's like the TR7 is on remote control. Putting the car back in is my job, refitting is reversal of removal.

I'm a bit gutted the car's out of action now[:(]
