Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

wide fender flare

Postby Graveshaker » 12 May 2008 15:58

Hello all, I'm a proud owner of a TR7. Before I inquire about wide fender flares on my TR7, I respect all of you Triumph owners that believes in originality. My asking of leads to purchase flares is solely my decision to modify my car. So please do not flame. I would like to give my TR7 a more aggressive look by adding wide fender flares. I'm interested in the type that bolt on, sort of like the 280z's use. I would like to put a set of wider wheels on the car as well. If anyone knows of a company that sells these fenders please post or email.

Thank you kindly........

Don't worry, you won't find too many people flaming you for being non-original - the general attitude here is 'It's your car, do whatever you like to it'. I doubt there's that many people on here that can claim to have a totally original '7, anyway!

As for the arches, the only ones I can think of that bolt on are the works rally arches, like these:

Available from a few different retailers, I'm not sure which ones will do it in the States, though!

I love that car, 2 fuel fillers (large ones at that), should it be a small filler on a 78 model year shell?

Is it the most famous 7?

It only has one fuel filler, the one on the right.
The one on the left is a battery cut out switch, the battery being in the boot on the left hand side.
This could be one of the most famous factory cars because it was driven by Tony Pond and won the Ypres rally in Belgium and the Manx rally on the Isle of Man in 1978.
Arches - has this been covered before?

Thanks RED, those are the ones I've been searching for. Now I have to find a set of wide wheels. 16"x11 maybe?

Graveshaker.

I have "discovered" tarmac arches a few months ago and posted about them in this thread:

http://www.forum.triumphtr7.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6598

Clearly, rally TR7 guys have known about those arches for a while, now. [:D] As I stated in that thread, I believe that this is a most reasonable solution, as those "wide body" kits will end up costing you well over $5000 by the time that you are done with painting everything.

The cost for these arches from Rimmer Brothers is $100 for the front and another $100 for the rear. I find this very reasonable! But, shipping from UK to US is another $200… So before I order myself a set, I will try to find some other US enthusiasts to split the shipping cost with me.

Since I am not ready to install them, I am not in a hurry and can wait to find such candidates. [;)]

That sounds like a plan. My other delima is finding suitable wheels. Any suggestions? I've inquired about 16"x11"s but was offended at the price. Any idea as to what width would suit thes flares?

First things first, you will need to use wheel adaptors... TR7 bolt pattern drastically limits your wheel choice! Then, you need to find a target tire size. Only then you can start looking for a proper wheel ;).

As for wheels, it found that even after you adapt to a more popular 4x100 wheel size, you still do not have a lot of choices for wide rims… Forget about TireRack or Tires.com, you need to go to much more obscure sources. And you still have to pay a lot.

Originally, I was looking at what "wide body" Miatas were using (they too use 4x100 lug pattern) and they have found some wide wheels. But they were still fairly expensive.

I kept looking and discovered a surprising source! VW kids put together most ridicules wheel/tire combinations! They use 10" wide rims with 205mm wide tires! And they stagger the sized front to rear (1-2" narrower wheels in the front).

Personally, I think that it is an idiotic trend, but hey, who am I am to speak of people's style choices. What matter is that many of all those kids tend to sell those wheels relatively cheap!

Check out VWvortex classifieds:

Personally, I love these rims:

There is a third option of getting blank wheels and getting the holes drilled. A club member who is doing a Buick V6 transplant did this from a place in southwest USA. He seemed to think the cost was reasonable. Can't recall place and cost but if your interested I can email him and get the particulars.

grndsm, I really like those Borbet 16x9s. I think with this setup a more narrow flare kit would be needed or none at all. These wheels would look really nice on a TR7 even without a flare kit. Any info on a 4x100 adapter kit?

I plan on posting pics of my 7 soon.

Yah but if you need a paint job anyways and your wheels wells are rusted through it sure would be tempting say with a Buick V6 pumping out 265 HP. Really wild to be driving on the street. Can you imagine the reaction as you ease over the speed bumps at your local A&W as you drive in to pick up your free root beer on Classic Car night on Wednesdays.

It's almost good enough to forget my "original car" ways.[8D]

I think that you are overestimating the amount of space under factory fenders! [;)] I can't fit 7" wide wheel with 205 tire on my TR7 without "rolling" of the inner fender! A slightly better offset might allow me to go up to 225 tires, but that is the absolute maximum.

9" rim with 275 (or larger) tire definitely requires a flare of some sort!

Search the forum, there are several very good threads on adaptor/spacers.

There is a set-up to move the rear shocks in a few inches allowing wider tires on the back with-out rolling the rear fenders.
