1980 TR7 Won't Start when Engine is Warm..

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

1980 TR7 Won't Start when Engine is Warm..

Postby mytvt » 09 May 2008 14:01

I recently purchased a 1980 TR7 with dual carbs. She starts up fine when the engine is cold, but after bringing her up to normal operating temperature and turning her off, she won't restart. She cranks strongly, but seems to be getting no fuel. If I spray some starting fluid into the carbs, she'll fire right up and run fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Possible vapor lock?

You're not alone - on hot days here in Texas if I get 'er good and hot she has trouble starting up as well.. Usually takes a couple of cranks and I have to rev 'er up pretty good after she starts to keep 'er idling.. Once she's idling everything is ok, tho..

Might also be the FASD, or auto choke sticking, but that's purely a guess.. as are most of my theories!

I was wondering if it might be the autochoke sticking. I've seen "Manual Choke" kits to replace the autochoke, do you know of anyone that has made the conversion?

Thanks,

Quite a few people here have done the conversion with mixed results.. I think the preferred method is to go the Weber carb setup or get an older '7 carb setup with a manual choke on it.. If you're stuck with the FASD, Woody at the Wedge Shop told me how to fix mine, which worked for my excessive high idle, so I made an online course to help show how its done.. you can view that at:

I foyu have questions about that, just holler.. I'm sure somebody who's done the conversion successfully (or not) will chime in here before long.. Good luck..

Thank you so much for the instructions. They're terrific, absolutely first rate!!

I'll take a look at it and see if it fixes the problem.

I'd love to change to a weber, like I did on my Midget, but not ready to fork out $1000 yet.

Thanks again, really appreciate it.

Mark - All I can attest to is that cleaning and re-aligning the FASD probably will fix a really high idle.. unless the problem resides in a loose vaccuum line or carb adjustment etc.. I have no idea if working on the FASD will help the problem you initially posted about with the car not starting while warm - its only a possibility.. and migh tnot even be a very valid one.. hopefully soemone will chime in on that.. JClay where you at, brother?

Thanks so much for the kind words.. Woody at the Wedge Shop gets all the credit, tho, for his fix of the FASD.. Eventually I plan to redo the course to be easier to follow some of the animations - especialyl the first one that shows WAY too much happening at once.. Thanks again, Mark, I appreciate the kind words..

After reading this thread yesterday, I did the thumb check, and sure enough, that was the problem. Took the FASD off, used throttle body cleaner on the tube and all, put it back together and now it is idling slow again. Gas mileage should improve!

Thanks to all!
