NIce day so thought i would take the 2L to work.
On way had problems engaging gear.By the time i got there it felt like the cluch was non existant.
After work had to virtually drive to home in 4th( not fun ).
I can get it into gear when it is not running but when it is running - no chance.
At home i noticed oil on the pedal and mats.
Having been driving it a bit lately and had no problems before,another thing i noticed on way home there was a rattling from the engine compartment like something was loose.
Any idea chaps as the weather is getting better and the roof is dying to come down.

Sounds very much like the clutch master cylinder is leaking to me. Is there any fluid left in the clutch reservoir?

The easiest first step is to refill it - if your clutch comes back in any way, then there's your problem. From the sounds of it, you'll need a new cylinder though, or at least new seals.

Not sure how that might relate to the rattling though, unless the whole thing has broken apart?

The master cylinder seals have gone. As a get you home you can keep a bottle of brake fluid in the car and keep filling it.
Assuming that the cylinder bore is OK a seal kit is pretty cheap, also quick to fit although the master cylinder has to be removed. Only took me about half an hour on the driveway, but you have to lock the inside of the mounting bolts with a pair of molegrips if you are alone. Bleeding is easier as a one man operation if you have an 'Easibleed' or similar, or you will need an assistant.

no fluid in cylinder , do you fill it up to the top.
I see on Rimmers they have a Master cylinder repair kit.Would this do the trick?
The rattling under closer inspection appears to be the bonnet on the wiper blades.
Are they supposed to be touching ,it seems strange as i have never heard the noise before but i must admit to having my music on loudish.
Will try filling her up(like i ask is it to the brim?)and will get back to you.

Fill to about 10mm from the top.
Rimmers kit should be OK provided the cylinder bore is not rusted or scored, in which case the unit will need replacing. I have never had problems with a seal kit on this and other cars in the past but I might have been lucky. Might be worth taking it off and checking first. I also found that the slave cylinder started leaking just after the M/C was fixed so might be worth thinking about doing both together.
Wipers should not contact the bonnet, are the retaining nuts tightened down properly?
