rear shocks and fuel tank

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

rear shocks and fuel tank

Postby geevee » 04 May 2008 02:28

Finally got my refurbised fuel tank installed today.....not a fun job! While I had the tank out I thought I would change out the rear shocks with some unipart shocks I purchased some time ago. Here is my question, the new shocks seem very weak I can extend and shorten them quite easily. Once compressed they also stay that way. The old shocks ( I don't know how old they are, I've had the car 5 years ) are much stiffer and when compressed always return to fully extended on their own. I am now wondering if I should use the new shocks or stay with the old ones. The old ones are kyb gas shocks. I don't know much about shocks so any input would be appreciated.
thanks, Gary.

Hi Gary,
Gas shocks, as the name suggests contain gas, it is this gas that returns the shock to its original postion when compressed. Standard shocks largley rely on the springs on the car to do this. The Unipart shocks will be a lot 'softer' in action. If you have modified front shock inserts you may well end up upsetting the handling of your car [:(]Or if modified springs fitted.
PS. Dont you love doing those fuel tanks [V] !!!
Cheers John

Can only give you more bad news here.
I would never ever use the original (Unipart/Girling) dampers, they are way too soft.
They can also have a very short life indeed. I know of a set on a new TR7 (yes very long ago) that lasted only 3000 kilometres. So if I were you I'd stick to the KYB’s. And they seem to have a good reputation.

Just get the car on the road and see who it handles.

stay far way from County shocks/inserts too ..........

When I fit my uprated springs I will also be upgrading to KYB's.

Ron.
