Por 15

Is it possible to use Por 15 as a preventive method to stop rust from forming. I have just become a new owner of a TR7. I want to use this product in known rust areas as the body has just been redone...

Any advice would be appreciated.

<font color="blue"><b>I can not see why not, get it before it starts. The rust preventing primer is as hard of nails so much better than the Hammerite stuff. What ever you do don't use that instead, I personally have found that it is no good at all. With the POR15 make sure that you use their three stage process to be on the safe side.</b></font id="blue">

If your using it on cast type metal it is usually quite pittd the POR-15 will grab it very well. If using it on "smooth metal" you have to pretreat with POR-15 Metal Ready so it can get some bite. Directions on the bottle but for none rusted metal apply for about 20 minutes, keep wet. Wash off. Dry. Apply POR-15, second coat in about 3 hours while slightly tacky.

Stir POR-15 with stick, do not shake. Clean top rim and top or it will seal the top on the can making reuse difficult. Store in cool place (inside garage beer cooler is ideal)[8D].

A little off topic, but . . .

How much POR 15 do I need to do the underside of a TR? I am going to put a protective coat over the POR 15 as instructed.

I don't wash the Metal Ready off ever!!! I let it either air dry or I use paper towels on it to dry it.

Your in luck, I've just painted the whole underside in por 15, I did 2 good coats from a US Quart size tin and still have some left over!!

Rblackadar, I just checked the label on Metal Ready and it says for bare metal, apply for 10-15 minutes, do not let dry, flush thoroughly with water.

Jclay, you don't have to coat POR-15 on the under side as you only have to do this if it's exposed to sunlight as POR-15 is not UV resistant. Unless you're planning to roll it over often. [:)] Mind you it doesn't hurt to do this although if you do either you should do this while it's still slightly tacky or sand it to rough it up for mechanical grip for the paint and/or give it a coat of primer first.
