Indifferent diff

Postby paul w » 24 Mar 2008 17:47

As if i aint had enough practise with back axles lately, the auto's
diff is gettin'very noisy. I had assumed it was a 3.08:1,no such
luck it is a 3.27:1 which are scarce. Anyone got advice on pulling
the thing out? Is it best to replace as a unit,or could diff be
dismantled and repaired? Whats the most cost effective way of doing
this job? I hope the half shaft bearings are ok cos i hear they are
a right 8ugg3r to replace on this three quarter floating axle!
Looks like another trek to 'Bobsport'is on the horizon!

See ya. Paul

If it is a 3.27:1 diff this means it's a "Dolly" rear axle.
So quite easy to get the complete centre assembly out of the axle casing, recondition it and put it back (contrary to the "5 speed" axlewere).
Remove half shafts and prop shaft. Then undo the bolts (8 iirc) on the front of the axle casing and pull the diff assembly out.

Paul, your auto *should* have a 3.45:1 diff.
