Despite what you say it seems to me that your alternator is on the way out. The symptoms you describe have occured on my own car many times and have always been caused by the alternator.

I would agree, modern reconditioned alternators seem to have a life expectancy of about 6 months these days!

Can somebody explain to me why exactly the IGN light stays one when your alternator is shot? MY ALT is shot and the IGN light is staying on and am just wondering what in the circuit causes this to happen.. Thanks

Son of a .... THATS gonna leave a mark!

SST,

The light is controlled by a circuit in the alternator. Unplug the thin brown/yellow wire on the back of the alternator, tape it off and the light will go out.

My ignition light is now on. My battery is @ a year old. Should I check the charging voltage at the battery terminals with a DVM?

Yes - if charging it should be ~ 14 volts. No charge - ~ 12 volts. Is the drive belt tight ?

Yes, if the light doesnt come on when you switch the ignition on, the alternator is usually at fault. When started the light should go off, if it stays on, the alternator is faulty.

I used to have a similar problem with the alternators on a fleet of
rental yachts, I ran in the Whitsunday Islands.

These had Volvo sail drive 8 & 12 horse power diesels in them.

Even when only a few months old, the connector supplying the exciter
field would get enough corrosion to reduce, but not stop the current.

The alternator would put out about 3 amps, & the light would glow a
little, but not enough to see in a bright sunny yacht cockpit. It
was visable at night, but the charterers were not allowed to move
the boats at night, & I did not do maintenance at night if avoidable.

It took a while to work out why the yacht's batteries were going
flat so quickly.

Once we included cleaning the alternator connections after every
charter, [ususlly charters were 7 days], in the service schedule, we
had no further problems, at least with battery charging.

I will check the connections on mine. I tested today with a DVM and I was getting 14.2 volts with the car running so I think it is my battery. I put a charger on the battery and the charger indicated an error code which was internal open cell. I guess I will take the battery back and get a new one.
