"new" TR7 owner

Let's get this party started! I just swapped a 1989 Range Rover (15mpg, lace floorboards) for a 1979 TR7 (hoping for much better mileage, solid rockers, wiring nightmare, dodgy strombergs). I have owned only a Herald (back in 75) and Spitfire MkII (later 70s). Lots of Rovers, Land Rovers and a couple Rangies since then. Volvos for regular duties.
This car needs some sorting. It has a chrysler alternator off who knows what, and no cold start whatever. EGR has rusted away. Airpump, surprisingly, is still there and appears to work. AC compressor was removed. I'd like to put a decent alternator back on. I wonder if there is a decent FI or two barrel conversion for this engine. I got it for economy and fun. I have plenty of Rover V8s under other hoods. Where in the US do you go for parts? Called Victoria British and talked to a girl who knew nothing about triumphs. Sigh. I'm used to great advice and service from Rovers North. I'm in north Georgia, above Atlanta. I'd like to get this somewhat better before British Motorcar Day at Berry College on May 17.
Cheers!

TR7 had Bosch L jetronic electronic fuel injection as an option '79 onwards, standard in 1981. If you can get one from a wrecker or from someone who has switched for SU's for whatever reason. There is always the possibility of a Megasquirt type system you pretty much may have to work out yourself. Someone on this forum may have looked into this I believe. You can get SU's with intake from UK, S&S Preparations in UK for example.

The girls and guys at Victoria British are order takers not mechanics so don't expect that type of help there. They are good for most parts. Common replacement parts are available from Moss UK out of California or British Parts Northwest out of Oregon (see websites.) For those parts you can't from these try Moss UK. Parts not available from these try Robsport (UK) or S&S Preparations (UK) as well as for souping up. Both Robsport and S&S will have the expertese you look for but are a long way away. Shipping is pretty high from UK but you may be able to get these parts through some British car place closer to home.

Expert advice is best got from local British Car/Triumph clubs which typically have a wealth of experience in their members or from forums like this one.

It might surprise you to know the Z/S carburetors really are excellent units when properly adjusted. Properly adjusted, that is the key phrase. And, getting them into a state of proper adjustment is NOT that hard. Nor is it expensive.

If you like, we can ellucidate on the steps for attaining correct and balanced Z/S carburetors for your TR7. Please let us know.

Mildred,
I have cleanded the FASD on my TR7, 1980 DHC, and found that the idle was restored to 800 RPM and the car ran much better. I don't know about Johndillingham but I would love some info on the Z/S carbs and how to keep them adjusted. Thanks in advance.

I don't care much for Strombergs myself so swapped in a pair of UK spec 1 3/4 SU's and saw a great improvement.
I have had great mail order parts service from Rimmer Brothers in the UK.
Enjoy your 7!

The SUs are indeed far better carbs ! No rotting diaphragms for a start!
