I have just got an original 5 speed gear know and it fits on my gear stick thread, (as I heard that there are two different sizes). However, when I tighten it up, where it goes tight is showing the gear diagram at the top to the left hand side, not centre.
I was thinking of putting a little bit of tissue at the top so when I tighten it up, the symbol will be facing the right direction. But I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and if so how they got around it.
Bit of a strange (and I am sure to some people this will seem silly) question, but I thought I would ask on the off chance that you can help.

Sounds like you are missing the locknut Phil, once you have screwed it down, set the diagram in the right place and tighten the locknut to the gearknob.

Thanks for this, I did not realise anything was missing here, good job I asked.
Is this also known as a jam nut (JN2158)?

Yes.
But jam is usually much more jelly-like and cannot fix a knob on a stick... [:D]

The late gearlever should have the larger diameter thread which is what you need to measure.

There are two different size threads on early and late 5 speed gear levers, that is what Steve means!

OK,
and that late, large diemeter thread are - what? I'm interested in more precise data than just 'metric'...
This discussion have given me an idea regarding my R380 and its gear lever handle/knob
- so the thread, please...
