Removing metal bumper bars

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 08 Jan 2008 07:51

I am going to take of the metal front and rear bumper bars so that I can clean them up, rust treat them and POR15 them, (totally in love with this product). With the back on it looks like there is 2 or 4 bolts either end holding it to the car. Is this all I need to undo and take off the fog light toe remove?
With the front bumper is it the same set up, remove the bolts and off it comes? Keeping an eye on the indicators.
I am going to rust treat the outside of the bar. With the bars, is the middle hollow or solid and if it is hollow, can it be rust treated easy enough?

on my 78 the rear bumper is fitted with four nuts on studs in the metal bumper, the bar itself is a very thick metal pressing that is hollow inside.

the fromt bumper is held on with 8 nuts (I think) four of which were very hard to see. again the pressing is a hollow section and it weighs a ton!.

The rear bumper on mine is actually held on with 6 nuts, 3 on each side. The front bumper has been changed from harmonic to Fhc type but is still held on with 6 nuts again 3 each side.

Check the pictures in Rimmers catalogue, they make it very clear.

The bars are hollow and can be rust-proofed as there is access to the inside via holes, (not rusty one's).

Phil,
Both front and rear bumper bars are held on with 6 nuts each (there are studs in the bars) But they're a bit of a swine to remove, the rear is the easiest you can get a socket on, but at the front because room is tight an offset spanner might be your best bet. They will be rusty and you might snap them off, or round the nuts, or the nut will be rusted to the stud and the stud will come out, which will make it easier!
Wire brush them and soak them in WD40 over night might help.

You'll be working from below so you'll need someone else to hold the bumper when/if its undone!

Oh yea, the nuts are 13mm.

I'm with you on the POR15, it really is great stuff, my Wife is sick of me telling her how great it is every time I paint another part of the car! I've just painted my engine block with POR15 engine paint and I'm also very impressed with that.

This is great guys. I think I will move the rear one first, do that and take it from there as I am sure by me removing the bumper, this will show me more areas that need working on lol. Then when that one is all done I will tackle the front one, that from what you are saying seems to be a right pain in the a@@, but most jobs on my girl are these days.
POR15 will cover my car I think in time. It is just a shame that they do not do the primer in a spray can and that it does not come in paint code CCK, (my car). If that was the case I would be such a happy bunny[:D]
