fresh air plenium

Postby striker308 » 18 Oct 2007 00:28

Did all the TR7's and TR8's have a fresh air plenium installed? My 1976 doesn't seem to have any signs that one was ever installed or ever existed?

Thanks,

The early ones had pleniums that bolted on, not clips.

Were the early plenums identical to the later ones minus the clips?
My early car has a later plenum with the clips, which have nothing to attach to. I have been thinking of removing the clips and just filling the holes.

Cheers,
Richard

Might be easier to add the clips to the car. Easy on and off.

FWIW I'm planning to eliminate mine. I'll fit a plate over the air intake with a 2 1/2" elbow in it & route a piece of duct hose to the right side engine air intake that is no longer used with the holley conversion. That way I can fit a larger air cleaner and IMO the engine bay looks better without it.

Well that's an option. But, the high pressure air from the base of the windshield will now be forced into the engine bay, that will compete with the high pressure air coming in from the radiator. These cars already have too small of a grill area to get decent flow through the radiator. Might consider plumbing the air into the air cleaner, but, that gets to be a big project, and that's why I stopped using the same system you are planning to make. YMMV, good luck with your project.

The early and late plenums looked similiar but there were some physical differences, so no they weren't exactly alike.

Speaking of air/intakes/etc...has anyone replaced the "breadbox" airbox with K&N stand alone filters? Feel better? Sound better? Mileage improvement? Anything? I just scored a pair off on eBay, if weather holds up,will put them on today.

That 'air scoop' has another helpful job.It stops rain entering grill and landing on the 'dizzy',thus avoiding ht failure on a wet summers day as i found out a couple of months ago.So,dont be lazy,clip it back on,youknow it makes sense!

See ya. Paul

Pardon for asking............hmm, what's a "dizzy" is this the coil? I notice when I replaced the original Lucas with some New Bosch plug wires the coil to distributor didn't have a plastic/rubber dome to protect the coil? Should I fabricate something?

English Talk:

Dizzy = distributor
Bonnet = hood
Hood = top
Boot = trunk
Wing = fender
Lift = elevator
Dolly = Dolomite Sprint
FHC (Fixed Head Coupe) = Hardtop
DHC (Drop Head Coupe) = Convertible
Roadster = Car with Removable soft top
chalk & cheese = day & night
Gutted = Feel like Cr@p!, Condolences
Bob's your uncle = (much debate on this one!) Ah HA!, You Bet!, There you go!, Yah lo crao!
Where Wolf? = There wolf!
Why are we talking like this?
I don't know, I thought you wanted to!

Fiveliters - if you fit the K&N cone filters to SU carbs then you will probably need to change to richer needles or else you will have a weak mixture. I am not sure of the recommended needle code for this, although BAL sticks in my mind for some reason. Check first.

With the right needles the K&Ns are supposed to give a modest BHP improvement, but you really need a tubular exhaust manifold as well to make the most of it, basically letting the engine breath better - another 15 to 20 BHP is possible I understand.

I'm planning to fab a sheetmetal piece in the middle and run the weather seal all the way across to channel the runoff water. Plus the dist is in the front. Didn't considered the airflow through rad deal. Mine has never had a heating problem. Have the stock electric fans & they bring the temp right down in traffic. My other reason for eliminateing it is I want to make a strut tower brace that ties into the firewall/scuttle. And sorry but no I don't want to sell it, just in case this masterplan doesn't work out.

Ha,ha,jclay.You got the 'Queen's English' sussed out.Now you could learn the 'Essex boy'tongue!noworrahmeenmaahn.innit!! Striker,the 'dizzy'is indeed the distributor.If your a teenager you could protect it from water ingress by cuting the fingers off a latex washing up glove and putting it over 'dizzy'.Works best if it's dayglow pink!The coil can be dressed up with a narrow drinks can overcoat(Redbull is a good'un!),ahh,the fings(things)i got up to with me Mini 1000 back in the 80's.RC40's,Dave Vizzard,straight cut dog boxes,Metro turbo's.I gone all gooey(mushy)now!

See ya. Paul
