Fuel injection

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Fuel injection

Is there a fuel injection inlet manifold that will fit the standard 2.0L engine? I can sort the electronics OK but dont have the neccessary tools to modify the manifold. Was this engine used in any other cars?

Paulg,

The TR7 was available with fuel injection over in the USA. One example been the TR7 Spider.

You should be able to purchase the complete used injection system most likely still. Try Robsport or S&S both have broken these type so might still have one available.

Hi birminghamtr7. Is the manifold for electronic or mechanical fuel injection? Any chance of a picture?

PI TR7's had electronic injection.
You can also use a TR7 Weber/Dellorto manifold in combination with throttle bodies

Why would you want to modify the manifold?

I want to do an EFI with port injectors, as these are easy to come by, and there is the problem with the 1-3-4-2 firing order and the siamesed inlets if converting SUs to injection. So I want 1 injector per cylinder. An inlet may already exist like this but I havnt come across one yet.

Bosch fuel injection came on all 1980 CA TR7s and on all 50 State 1981 TR7s. It is a decent system, much like what you find in most late 80's and '90's cars.

I ended selling my complete system (intake manifold/ECU/wiring/MAS/exhaust manifold and a fuel pump) and I was very impressed by it. If I was going to keep the original 4 banger, I wouild have used it!

But there is certainly no need to design your own FI system when you have such good OEM system awailable to you! I would look for a FI parts car or someone parting one out.

Not all 1980 California cars were FI. Spiders were made from May '80 to September '80 and I have seen California Spiders on sale on ebay with Carbs (third letter in VIN is a Z).It started out as an option and some time in 1980 it became mandatory. My July 80 (build date) Spider original bill of sale stated the option was mandatory so at least half way through 1980 it became mandatory but don't know what month.

As well as intake the gas tank and sender is different although I guess you could jury rig something that would work. Easy enough to weld in a bung to fit the oxygen sensor in exaust manifold. The Bosch mutiport injection works well as Audio, VW, BMW, Saab, Mercedes used it as well. A modern multiport programmable ECU would no doubt work better but to customize that installation would be a challenge.

the shiny one is my cleaned up one ready to go back on engine my spare is only different in respect of the a water pipe at a different angle on top later inlet manifold.

As I said before, they had ECU and MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor). So what do you think? [;)]

The TR7 had Bosch L-jetronic Fuel injection (electronic) with lambda feedback (oxygen sensor). Some of the BMW's didn't have the feedback (can't remember off hand if it was 528 or 530) so any changes in gas, mechanicals etc. weren't compensated for (read not as good). It was multi-port although all the injectors fired at the same time it made no difference in practice. The ECU was Bosch as well unlike the TR8 which had a Lucas ECU.

But what are you trying to gain with fitting FI?
Mine has FI and I also drove it with carb's for a while.
You might save some fuel .
And the carbs have more bottom power(lower revs) and the FI systeem spreads the power more trough the whole range.
But gaining more power..
I didn't mention it.
