FITTING WINDSCREEN

Has anyone tried refitting a front windscreen using the factory method- ie two batteries and the solbit sealer kit or are their better modern day fitting/sealing methods ?

I think it is better to use the modern PU based glue/kit to fit the windscreen. Much better adhesive and easier to apply. You do need the correct primer though (used 3M kit + primer)
Biggest problem with the solbit kit is the heating wire. Real pain if you have to remove the screen.

I agree...polyeurethane all the way. There's a dam they need to fit on many older cars to keep the urethane for going all over the place and making a big mess. Getting it professionally done would not be a bad idea at all.

My TR7 was fitted with a new windshield or 'windscreen', before I bought it and had it shipped from South Carolina to Texas. I have the receipt and 'dam' was on it. The guy did a great job.

The modern day gluing of windshield is preferable but is affected by ultraviolet light. That's why windshields on new cars have blackout paint around the edges, to block that out. Something similar would have to be done to the TR7 windshield.

Modern cars don't have stainless finishers like the TR7 also.

With a dam fitting urethane bonding on a TR7, you have the stainless finisher from the top, dam from the inside, the pinchweld from bottom and pillar from the outside. Seems to me that's going to negate any possible UV effects for a LONG time if ever. Fitted right I think it's a non issue.

With decent storage make that a double non issue IMO.

Took a close look at my TR7 windshield and you're right, it is nicely protected around the periphery. Any diagonal UV leakage would largely be absorb by the longer distance it would have to travel through glass. The large area of ceramic frit you see on newer cars probably has to do a lot with asthetics as well as protecting the glue. They do mention you can paint the edge of windshield with pinchweld primer. Hopefully I won't have to replace mine for a long time so I'll have plenty of time to hear of any TR7 flying windshields.[;)]

I replaced the windscreen myself some 10 years ago when restoring the car and it is still there, not flown out and no leaks [;)]
(OK I had a helping hand from a friend who works in a body repair shop ...)

.. I have to do my windscreen too it leaks .. (still original from 1980) but

a friend of mine has a Body shop and he told me no problem he does every week some windscreens an so he has experience .. let's .. but how to get the old glue out ?? reheating??

You might try that, but off the three windows I tried to remove I never found the wires to reheat it.
In comes the cutting wire. Sadly there's also the heating wire...
Overall score till date 3 screens removed only one saved [B)]

My screen leaks something awful. Sometimes it seems wetter in the car than out. My local glass shop checked their computer and it seems that all 3 major glass suppliers in Canada are out of stock. The local British car shops won't deal in glass as our government insurance monopoly has made it not worthwhile for them, and to top it off, Moss has them on backorder.
I would have a go at resealing mine, but a large stone strike and a scratch makes that futile. I will just have to stock up on towels until Moss gets some screens.[:(]
