Wheel Hub Upgraded Bearings

Hi All,

Anyone know if it is possible to modify the standard front wheel hubs to take larger / stronger bearings? Standard bearings just seem to be made of chocolate (or something softer), and the torque setting is a pain in the proverbial.

I think I recall seeing that you can put SD1 hubs on instead, but I want to keep the PCD and the AP brakes, so that won't work for me.

TS Imported Automotive will convert your hubs for larger bearings, so it is possible:

Big front wheel bearing kit - replaces small outer wheel bearing with a larger bearing. This keeps the hub from distorting. Kit includes modified hub, new inner and outer wheel bearings and seals. Price is exchange. 2 required.

Not worth the money, just buy good quality bearings.
And make sure they are fitted correctly and check on a regular basis.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Easy to say Beans, not always easy to find good quality bearings. Any suggestions on manufacturer to chase down?

Beenleigh Bearings, southern Brisbane suburb, have all the best bearings. They were the only people who could tell me what was wrong with my flywheel, causing my clutch to not release properly, & can supply almost anything, due to the knowledgeable people there.

I have no idea if they do mail order, but worth a try. They supplied all my new bearings 17 years, & 73000 kilometres ago for the 7, & they are still smooth & silent.

SKF or FAG. Both can supply the necessary bearings

Mines fitted with a V8, and 195 15 tyres, in the last 25 years it has done 100,000 miles and I have never changed the bearings, when I had the hubs off to change the discs recently they looked fine, as said above use a known make of bearing from a reputable source (lots of knock off parts on ebay , Amazon etc) and good quality grease and they should be fine.

Or for £495 + carriage to the other side of the world ......

+1 for going the quality bearing route. On the Mini Forum there's multiple posts from those who've fitted cheaper wheel bearings from eBay or Amazon and not invested in Timken items. I coughed up for Timken and hopefully it'll be proved right when the Mini eventually returns to the road.
