TR7 4 Speed Propshaft

Hi folks

The gator on my 4-speed '77 prop is split. Does anyone know if this is an easy repair? I have been quoted £165 for a new prop so it would be great if I can have my existing one renewed (I imagine it would also be worth changing the UJs at the same time).

Anyone have any experience of this predicament?

I thought the 4 speed prop shaft had UJ's (and only the 5 speed had CV joints)? If it has CV joints I have heard that Mini CV boots fit but I am not sure how they are fitted. I have a spare prop shaft which needs new gaiters and some Mini boots but have never got around to trying to fit them.

If it has gaiters it is probably better to replace the prop shaft with one with UJ's (available from several specialists) as they last better and can be fitted with nipples for lubrication, and rebuilt if necessary.

4 speed prop has one UJ and one CV joint. To replace the gaiter of the CV joint you have to dismantle the joint.
And as these are non service joints no repairs are possible (according to the book).

But with a lot of time, care and patience it is possible to remove the shroud that holds the gaiter in place.
A friend has done it before, but as already stated it is a lot of work and it is pretty easy to ruin the joint in the process.

Go for one with two UJ's, they can be serviced and refurbished when necessary.
