DHC Steering Rack Adkustment Question

Does anyone else have a similar steering rack play to mine? My parts book shows that the adjustment is made by shims under the "NSS" hexagonal adjuster.
https://www.revingtontr.com/catalogueim ... 1G-04L.jpgHowever, my rack's adjustment isn't made by changing the shims because there aren't any. It has a two piece adjuster. The adjuster is moved up and down in the rack's housing using an large Allen key (12mm?) and is locked off at the top by a 1 1/2" hexagonal nut.
I would show a photo but my Imgur account only seems to publish my signature pic.

Every rack I have seen is adjusted as the one you picture, by removal of shims. Usually just a 5 thou shim is all that can be removed, without making the thing a bit tight at full lock, where there is little wear.
I have been told of ones like yours, which were presumed to be fitted to very late cars.

Mine had no shims. I adjusted by adjusting screw. Build date July 1980.

My Canley car was first registered in April 1980 so was amongst the earlier DHC's sold in the U.K. Every wedge owner I've spoken to has adjusted their rack with shims. I was thinking mine was an aftermarket item even though I've owned it since '86.

Picked up a car load of assorted TR7 stuff today and it includes three different kind of steering racks with different ethods of adjustment.
Don't know if they are originals or after market but shows the variety out there.

Mine is also like the front (lowest in the picture) with the grease plug in the middle of the large recessed 'nut'. Not sure how you would grease the middle one.

I have both front and rear lying around. But I haven't seen one like the one in the middle so far.
I think the rear one is an early one (as it matches the drawings in both parts manuals), while the one at the front is a later one.

Just double checked mine and I've the middle one with no obvious adjustment. Mines a late model X plate DHC.
I had a late model FHC quite a while ago and I'm sure it was the same as well. Probably a parts bin specials

I nipped up the adjuster by one flat (60 degrees) and a tight spot appeared, not at full lock but at 1/4 to 1/2 turn left of the steering wheel and nowhere else. Gradually winding back the adjuster removed the high spot and its back to its original setting.......
