Stainless steel exhaust............

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

I've got the Magnaflo SS muffler on stock resonator (after catalytic converter) with Thrush muffled tail pipe. One would think I would havec a quiet sound with all that but it is quite nice deeper sound that you can hear at all speeds but highway speeds yet never so obtrusive that it is bothersome even on long distance trips. I got a muffler shop to weld on the muffler and a new bracket for the tail pipe. I have since painted the muffler with POR-15 for effect. As you can see there are no cripped creases just welded rounded edges. The muffler was $86 and the install was somewhere $50 to $80 as I recall.

I had the short tail pipe fall off the rear resonator, of my second 7, not long after I bought it. With the pipe it had sounded nothing. Without it it sounded beautiful.

To try to preserve the sound I welded a larger diameter bit of pipe on to replace the old bit.

I can't remember the actual sizes, but they were something like 1 3/4" original & 2 1/2" replacement. The change in sound was beyond my expectation for such a small change. Remember this was only about 8" of pipe.

When I visited a mate a bit later, & drove very gently up his steep & rather broken up 70 yard long drive, he was waiting as I got to the top. He said, "You! What have you done to it? By the sound I thought it was at least a 6 liter coming up the drive".

So in the words of the old love song, when it comes to exhausts, "Little things mean a lot".

I have a 4 into 1 manifold mated to custom piping and using magnaflo resonator and muffler. I believe the diameter is 2 1/2". The sound is very deep when toodling around, but becomes anMG with the revs after 4000. No fitment problems to deal with. The price was about $300 Can. from the manifold.

Perhaps the baffles are loose in one of the silencers Chunkychops. Stainless steel sounds different to mild steel so it can sound dreadful when the baffles go.

Also, are you certain it's not blowing at the cylinder head to manifold join? This will make a TR7 sound like a tractor.

Ive got a stainless steel exhaust on mine and it sounds bloody horrible.
Its not so much of a rumble or a throaty growl, most people have said it sounds like a tractor.

Mine came with a tubular manikfold and SS exhaust (Rimmers I think). Neighbours have only been complimentary about the sound (!) but to me it sounds a bit tractor like up to about 1800 revs, then starts to growl. Not so good when cruising at 40-50 in traffic in 5th.

Theres no obvious smoke or emission at the head/manifold join.
What if the manifold gaskets need replacing?
Can the baffles by replaced or repaired or is it a new silencer?

I s'pose its a case of taking the exhaust off and having it checked through yeh?
