Alan,
From what I have read, the North American (possibly just the US) cars needed the cable or tie bar to keep the engine from splitting apart from the transmission and flying their own separate ways.

I just had that discussion and someone said he had heard it was that in a frontal 5 mph collision the motor would separate from the rubber motor mounts and would run into the radiator. The cable was to keep it in place to keep damage down to an acceptable level to meet the government criteria. Also to secure it from separating from the vehicle in more severe cases. Spitfires also had it. I guess N/A vehicles with their couple tons of Detroit iron didn't need it as they would just demolish those little British cars like tanks going over some garbage cans.

Those rubber mounts, actually a whole TR7 survives a 15 mph crash into some rather sturdy hedgegrow without any damage. OK the headlights were a bit out of tune for a minute or so due to the impact[:I]
