Thanks for the info, it is greatly appreciated. I will remember the 3-in-1 oil tip and the one about the transmission. My pickup uses ATF fluid in the tranny. I will check the Vin and see if the eight character is an A.

Well I went and picked up the 1980 DHC today. It ran fine until I turned into the driveway and then started running on two cyclinders. Fixed that, turned out to be plugs and plug wires. The windshield wipers won't work however. They are frozen in the up position. I know nothing about these cars except my mechanical knowledge of other cars that I can apply to it. Do any of you know the best manual, if any, to buy for this car? Pictures of the car will be posted tomorrow. Also, what will a replacement top(soft top) run me, as this one is torn in one spot.

You can get some parts from Moss USA (catalogue is available on line in pdf format.)

British Parts Northwest in Oregon have decent prices and good quality products.

When ordering rubber parts (seals etc.) get the more expensive brand name ones, (big difference in the quality of rubber).

Best manual is original factory manual, used to be printed by Bentley Publishers now by someone else. Available on eBay.

You should be able to get it from Amazon. Distant second best is Haynes and the like. Although it's cheaper get the more expensive red book. Worth every penny.

Parts are mostly available and usually cheap. For parts not available from the above vendors you can order from UK from Moss UK, Robsport, S&S Preparations but shipping gets expensive if parts are heavy or large. There are other vendors in the US but these are the main ones.

Remember: You've just bought a car that won the 1980 Trans Am series in V8 form (winning 5 of 6 races, knocked out of race 6 by a slower car) beating Jaguar, Lotus, Porsche and Corvette who were all racing for second place. So if anyone looks down their nose at you tell them to put that in their pipe and smoke it.[8D]

Thanks again guys. I love these online forums. You guys are just as helpful as the VW people I normally hang with in The Samba. Looking forward to having fun with this car, I didn't intend to be working on it as soon as I got it home but that is the way it goes.

Congrats on your purchase!
If you have mechanical aptitude and common sense you will do just fine with the 7.
I find that it's best to invest in both a factory manual and a Haynes manual. The factory manual is designed for trained mechanics and the Haynes manual is designed for rank amateurs. Most of us fall somewhere between the two and the manuals complement each other.

Shop around on Ebay for a Haynes manual, I picked one up in the UK for 2.50UK Pounds!

Believe it or not, found a Haynes in the glove box! Did I mention this jewel only has 10,103 miles on it? Original, verified by the friend who sold it to me. Actually it has more than that now because I drove it. I fixed the miss, mostly, need a new distributor cap and rotor, which I will recieve tomorrow and new spark plug wires, which I will also get tomorrow. It runs good now but it has a flat sound to it that tells me one cyclinder isn't firing exactly right. It seems to have an electronic distributor, an AC judging by the manual but the manual doesn't cover electronic AC distributors only points. I guess I need a bently. Need to work on the windshield wipers also, haven't a clue but will evidently find out one way or another. Thanks again to all of you. How many female owners of TR7s are on this site. On the VW forum there are a lot of them turning their own wrenches and doing a great job fixing their bugs.

If original, you may have a Delco electronic distributor with its square Delco made in France coil with integral amplifier on the LH fender like mine is. If earlier '80 may have Lucas electronic.

Most likely the cap rotor and wires will fix it. Don't forget the plugs. While it may only have 10,000 miles time has passed.

Nope, not trying to get hooked up, just curious. I have already changed the plugs. I am sure the rotor, distributor cap and new plug wires will fix it the miss. I have taken most of it out already by scraping the contacts on the distributor cap and rotor. Yes, it looks like a delco electronic ignition but could be a Lucas. I understand they both have the screw on rotor cap.

Of the belief that if it is electrical and on a Triumph it will go wrong.

Owned my car for a week and already the indicators do not flash, and the rear lights have gone on holiday - but they definately worked when I picked the car up!

Probably some iffy earth, just cannot be bothered looking for it - have instead stuck the car in the shed out of sight out of mind!

Here is picture of the 1980 DHC. Also, I have an inline fuel filter before the fuel pump, is that normal? Manual says there isn't one but there it is. Maybe PO put it there huh?
Alright, I now have a smaller photo on this reply also. I think perhaps a little bigger would have been better but this is superior to the huge original.
