Annual Inspection Woes

Awesome! I need to do brakes on the spider before I take it in for it's inspection in April, and the last time I took the rear ones apart I did something wrong putting them back together and had no hand brake. My "mentor" fixed it in 5 minutes, so I've been hesitant to do them without his onsite guidance. Using your guide and pictures, I'm going to give it a shot on my own. Thanks!

I remember those days of "safety inspections". A few years back a lot of the garage and shop owners, who were certified by the state of Oklahoma to give inspections, got together and started complaining to their senators and congressmen. They said they were losing too much money tying up a mechanic and a lift for the $3.00 dollars they got for the inspection. The state got the other $2.00. So the Oklahoma State Legislature passed a bill doing away with safety inspections. But instead of the state losing the $2.00 per vehicle income, they added $2.00 to your tag renewal each year. Now everybody's happy. Especially me....I have an MGB, Porsche, and Sunbeam that I had to deal with each year. And now I have added a TR7 to that group.....it sure is nice to to have to deal with that anymore. I gladly pay $2.00 more for my tag, which is only $21.00 anyway.

Well - The annual test here is about £45 = $90 !! (Some will do it for slightly less - that's the max they can charge). AND we have to pay an annual 'road tax' fee for a TR7 of £180 = $360. And - our petrol now costs just over £1/litre ~ £4.50/gallon = $9/gallon!!
How do you like these numbers!!!

Don't like'em. Here in BC only the "Lower Mainland" (Vancouver to Chilliwack) has annual air care at $23 or $45 depending on age of car.
Outside of this area, no checks (done away with years ago, who says politians can't have a lick 'o sense). License fee is about $57/year for regular lisence or $200 for license and insurance for "Collector car", no mileage limit. Fuel is about $1.06 to $1.12/litre (that's $1.13 in american money as of today[:)]). We do have it good here.

As a "Lower Mainlander" I actually miss the old "City Inspection" It was a pain in the butt but tested things like your lights, suspension play and brake balance. Not too in-depth or onerous and if I recall it was only five bucks.
As for the "Air Care" testing that F1spyder described above, apparently it has been so successful that it will be phased out by 2011. (One of our lcal MG club members runs the program and it seems he will be out of a job)
Yep, occasionally those politicians do have a cogent moment![:D]
