Fuel Tank capacity

Postby striker308 » 09 Dec 2007 02:24

I thought my 1976 (Californina) TR7 had a fuel capacity like 14.6 gallons. My TR7 wouldn't start the other day, added 4 gallons to it via a gas can and it started right up. I immediately drove to the gas station and it would only take 5 more gallons till the pump shut off.

I'm confused??? Is my tank smaller? Is it possible to only have around a 10 gallon tank?

Karl,

Looking the handbook it is 12 Gallons imperial and 14.2 Gallons US.

Is there a difference over here 8 pints equal a Gallon in england.

On a bad note your tank isn't been suck in so the capacity is by result getting less.

Tr7jim,

Sorry, what do you mean by ;"On a bad note your tank isn't been suck in so the capacity is by result getting less". Are you suggesting that I might have crud in the tank?

I, too, thought I had a 14 gal tank, but on reading my original manual last night, found out that my 1980 has a 16 gal tank.

I understand that tank capacity can be limited by how deep the filler neck protrudes into the tank.
Is that correct?

Karl.

If your tank is been sucked in so in effect the tank is been drawn in, on its self. E.g. the fuel is been drawn out but no air been allowed to take up the space of the used fuel.

Hope you understand and should be a easy check by looking under your car at the fuel tank.

Tr7jim, yes that makes sense now. I'm just concerned that I might have something in the tank taking up the space. Isn't there a product you can pour in a tank to seal it? Is it possible my tank was repaired at some point.

Thanks,

Bending the thread slightly, has anyone managed to enlarge the tank, or fit a custom larger tank? On a long run, 12 Imp. gallons doesn't go very far with a V8[:(] - I can see space being tight when you've allowed for axle travel, but when my existing (original) tank loses interest in further toil I'd like a gallon or two extra in the replpacement if poss.

I have a complete record of the 140 times I have filled my 7s tank,
in approaching 6 years of use.

On one occasion, when the warning light was on for some miles, it
took 36 liters,[just over 8 gallons] to have it full, to the top of
the filler neck.

On only 3 other occasions it took 30 liters.

I believe that Rich is correct. Its the position of the filler neck
& the breather, which traps a large volume of air, in the top of the
tank, making it impossable to fill completely.

The tank in our 8 is a 7 tank, modified to suit the fuel injection
pick up. It has a modified breather system, allowing it to be
filled, properly. I have got 50 liters, [11.3 imperial gallons] in
to it on a number of occasions.
