I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember the old used
car dealer trick for noisy diffs. In the 60s, it could be hard to
hear the motor, above the howling of the diff, in many old cars.
The trick then was to put banana peels in the diff, which would
quieten them for about 1,000 miles or so.
When STP oil treatment products came on the market, in about 1963,
in Oz, all but the worst of them switched to that. Not only could
they no longer be accused of "dudding" the cars, they actually were
doing some good. It did a better job of quieting the diff as well.
If yours is still noisy, with the correct oil level, stick in some
STP, about 20% is good, it sure won't do any damage.
