TR7 FI Coil Wires

TR7 FI Coil Wires

The wires to my '81 coil have been "repaired" by the PO. All crimps. I preferr solder and heat-shrink.

I'm colorblind, so I asked the 5-year old to tell Daddy what color the wires are. There's a "greenish-blue" and a red. I'm guessing one should go to the distributor, and the other goes to the starter for current?

If I buy an aftermarket coil, if I remember correctly, there are 2 primary terminals. If looks like there's a third wire that didn't make the cut in the repair, but all I find is frayed wires. Any thoughts?

Not sure if these wire colors changed for the FI models.

Also, below the coil, under the master cylinder, there's a white plastic unit. Looks like you could thread a speedo cable on one side, then out the other. Like a cruise control module. An thoughts as to what it is?

The gadget under the master cylinder is a "Service Interval Indicator". Unless you are a concours buff, totally unnecessary!

So, the wires that go to my coil....they disappear under my distributer...I'm guess that's where they come from? Yah, been a while since I've looked at a car that has a distributer and a single coil.

Reason I ask - with the key turned on, engine not running (of course), when I wiggle the wire pair that plugs into the coil, I hear a tick coming from over yonder near the distributor.

That kind of "it's a bad spark, bare wire somewhere grounding out" kind of tick.

<b><font color="red">Update</font id="red"></b>Well, it was just the noise of the really thick casing around the pair of wires tapping on a brake like that made that tick. I'll just start with a new coil. [B)]<b><font color="red">Update</font id="red"></b>

Is there a pair of wires that shoots from the distributor to the coil (red and greenish blue)? None of my wiring diagrams show the FI models. :(

I thought all FI cars had the Delco "Made in France" coils that are like a square box with one cable (running wires internally) going from coil to distributor. If this is true it sounds like you have an aftermarket or earlier setup.

no, I have the Delco setup. I really need to figure out what the 2 wires do, and where they go.

Here is a picture of my coil setup. As you can see there is only one molded cable going to coil. Can't tell what colours the internal wires are as it is sealed. Molded cable plugs into coil. Is your coil not like this?

add alot of dirt, and yes, it looks like that. The molder end is cu toff, and female slide terminals have been added. There's a plug under there that looms up with the plug that comes off the master cylinder.

Where does the other end of the molded plug go? The dizzy?

I took the alternator to Autozone and Advance, and neither could test it. The computers list a 25acr, but show a pic of an alternator with a 3-terminal plug on it. Mine has one terminal, one big terminal, and one small terminal.

So, I'll try NAPA tomorrow. Maybe an old guy there can test it.

The other end of molded plug goes to the dizzie. Why you have only two terminals on your alternator is a mystery. Any one else out there with an alternator like that?
