Hi Mark, & welcome to the forum.

I had something similar on one 7. The clutch was not fully
disengaging. I could not get it to come out of a couple of gears
when stationary. I would get a clash of gears, if I tried to put it
into those gears, when the car was stationary.

It turned out to be the spring diaphragm was loose in the cast iron
part of the pressure plate, & not moving it far enough to give full
disengagement of the clutch plate.

There was no noise, or other symptom, with the thing in the car, but
with the pressure plate out, in your hands, it rattled when you
shook it.

Not the answer you might like, but the best I can do. Hope you find
another cause, perhaps air in the slave cylinder.

What oil are you using ? And - does it only do this in 5th gear ?

WELCOME to the BEST TR7 / 8 Forum in the world EVER, i agree with my learned friend Hasbeen, have you checked the condition of your clutch fluid? if horrible and black then a poss of inpending seal problems. Also as clutch / brake fluid absorbs water (out of the atmoshere) then then may be vapour pockets forming. Have you any oil leaks at rear of engine or front of gearbox, oil getting on the clutch plate will swell it up when it gets warm.

Hum? If you have had two mechanics work on the car, then they have probably replaced the shifter bushing (?) so maybe no worries there. (You might want to check for excessive movement of the shifter housing anyway!)

You might try 2 Quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid ($7.99 US/QT) in your transmission. Also, have you checked your clutch fork for excessive wear? The pins on the fork wear and let the throw-out bearing carrier bind. Also, what Hasbeen and John 215 said!
