I want to repair and repaint the windscreen base trim panel. I was going to do it in-situ, but on reflection I think I might as well remove it, so that I can treat any rust that may have formed underneath.

I've removed the wiper arms and the two retaining screws, but the wiper spindles have tapered plastic spacers on, which are holding the panel in place, and I can't seem to get them off. Do they just pull away (prise off with a screwdriver?) or is there a special technique?

Hi,
Lubrication!! thats what you need.They 'should' just pull off but can be leavered of very carefully, if you need to remove the nuts holding the wheel boxes on then you will find they have 8 sides,BL dont you just love those guys!!!

Yes, I've already "removed" (i.e. mangled) the 8-sided retaining nuts. Not only are they 8-sided, but also a really odd size, and made of brass, so you just end up mashing them with mole grips!

Cheers, guys. Managed to prise them off. Just need to order new rubber gaskets for them and new 8-sided retaining nuts.

Glad I took it off, as the underside was rusted a lot worse than the top. I've given it a really good basting with rust-cure, so hopefully that will stop it getting any worse. The bodywork underneath was very sound. Lots of mud and crud under there, but completely rust-free once I'd cleaned it off!

I'll now be able to get it looking really tidy before I put it back together.

If you've been following my project, you'll know that I'm not particularly bothered about how good it looks, as long as it's sound and I can keep the rust at bay. Having said that, any bits that are easy to tidy up and will improve the overall look of the car, I will do. Same goes for the engine bay. I wasn't bothered about getting it all cleaned up before I dropped the engine in, but now it is in, I'll gradually clean up bits here and there (e.g. repaint cam cover, header tank, etc.)
