Starter flashbacks

I had a 79 Spitfire and a 79 TR7 back in the early 80s. All the Lucas issues became such a blur...now with my "new" 80 DHC, I'm flashing back to starter problems on my TR7. The dang thing intermittently starts...always at home...never on the road. I'm getting tiring of asking whomever for a push. I seem to remember exchanging my 79's starter 3 times in two years. After all these years, is there a solution?

Perhaps if you disassembled and cleaned and/or replaced the solenoid on top of the starter and maybe also the starter brushes.

On the bench in the machine shed is a spare starter we will be going thru next week. It exhibited increasing difficulty in engaging the ring gear over a few months period. If you like we can report on our findings and recommendations.

Thanks! I purchased a new gear reduction starter. Hopefully starter woes are behind me for good!

Make sure all of the connections in the starter circuits and the battery terminals are clean as well.
