which thread into the bellhousing

Can anyone tell me are they unc or metric threads for the 2 bolts that hold the clutch slave to the bellhousing. I was sent two metric bolts with a kit from a well known tr7 specialist but thought they were all unc. If it makes a difference it is an SD1 bellhousing for a V8. The threads in the bellhousing are well worn and I'm afraid to try the bolts in fear of completely stripping them

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem with mine [:(] What i done was to drill the holes completely through the bell housing and then tapped out using a 8mm tap,make sure you drill out with a small drill than 8mm!Then secured using long bolts,if that had not worked or fails then i will helicoil the holes but tried this first as a cheaper option [;)]

The engine uses SAE, Body uses metric. Question is what's part of the engine and whats part of the body. I've just taken my slave off to replace o ring on pump (my only oil leak.) The clutch slave bolts are metric (8Mx1.25) and the oil pump bolts right next to it are SAE 5/16" UNF. This for 4 cyl. and according to John the same for V8 bellhousing. You can double check bolt measurements in official manual or a tap and die set will have gauges in it. The set is handy to have to chase all nuts and bolts to get off rust, oxidation and burrs so you can assemble with torque settings to act correctly.

Yes, thanks Guys it is m8 threads. This could only happen on a British car built in the 70's. I will go with option 1 which is to drill right through and re thread with m8 tap and use 75mm long bolts.
It must seem mad to be working on this Christmas eve but I am determined to get the engine and box in over the next few weeks and I have the whole of the first week of Jan off, and I knew I would have some niggly problems like this. I really wanted to spend that week putting my collection of new bits on the car instead of chasing around fixing crap like this.

If it doesn't fit you obviously need a bigger hammer.

When I was putting my new slave cylinder in last year, I also striped the first sections of threads in the bell housing. I realized that the bolts were too short to get enough threads going before the pressure became too strong.

I went down and got two bolts about 1/2" longer than the originals. Now I started the cylinder with these and took them in as far as they would go. Then I removed one and replaced it with a short original bolt. I bolted this bolt all the way in and then removed the other long bolt and replaced it with the correct original bolt.

Job done. Drilled out the hoile right through with a 6.5mm drill and then re tapped the hole to M8. Used a 75mm long M8 set screw and it worked really well.
