Signed, but not sure it will have much effect. There are still too many cars of that age and it would reduce the tax income!

Signed, it used to be 25 years then 30 years, hopefully it will revert back to 30 years but who knows.

My concern is that if they roll it too far there may be a lot more folks buying old cars purely to avoid paying for tax/MOT and not caring about the cars.
It could change how the general public view classic cars, from generally liking them to being seen as a problem.

Hi Russ, you are probably right in that respect and could cause a lot of concern where people buy a car within the age group, get free road tax & mot, then run them for a while and put them in a scrappage deal.
I think that the 30 year deal applies to a lot of countries on the continent, Beans could probably confirm this, and I think it is 25 years in Sweden.

Over here in The Netherlands tax exemption used to be 25 years. But than came the skint people who started importing cheap 25 year old bangers from abroad and drive them to the ground as cheap daily transport. So the inevitable happened, the tax exemption age was raised to 40 years to tackle this. But to compensate the real hobby cars they invented a transitional arrangement. Cars between 25 and 40 years can be used all year round for the full tax tariff, or you pay only 25% in which case you are not allowed on the road in the months of December, January and February. A fair amount of old cars were sold or scrapped ...

Thanks Beans for the information I know you have mentioned in your blogs about the time your cars are off the road and when you are having your first drive back on the road.
Hopefully, the goverment will keep the tax exemption on a permanent basis as is because like all goverments they can change their minds if they start looking to get more money from the .motorist.

Ha Ha Beans and Cobber,so right never ever trust a politician, the three qualities needed to become a politician, a competent liar, an equally competent actor but most important of all to have a bloody good memory as you need that for the first two qualities

Here in British Columbia, Canada, we don't have MOT or road tax. We do have a special licence plate and cheaper provincial insurance for "collector cars". The conditions are.
Must have one other car insured as a regular driver.
Can not drive to work or school.\
Must be 25 years or older or 15 years or older if the company is no longer making cars (gone out of business).
Is in good shape (pictures submitted) and original or additions are period specific (were available when the car was new). Safety updates are permitted like upgrading brakes, seat belts etc. Things like radios can be updated internally but must look period from the outside.
Unlimited mileage (tends to be mitigated by not driving to work or school but you could drive around North America if you wanted to).
Things like previous self appointed value has been done away with but you can get a professional appraisal so it isn't written off as an "old car" if in an accident.
