Triumoh TR7 Late fuel filler caps

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 30 Jun 2019 17:33

Hi guys,

I have recently replaced my tank and sender unit as when my girl came back from Sydney, she had a big crack in the tank and rust all over the place.

While replacing it, I noticed that the filler cap was gone, so time for a new one. The issue is that they seem to be hard to get hold of, (9cm or 3.5 inch across).

Does anyone know where we can get these from or have people replaced their caps on their later cars with an alternative?

Triumph TR7 Late fuel filler caps

Postby busheytrader » 30 Jun 2019 17:59

Some toe rag pinched the original one off my car a couple of months ago.

I got a decent s/h lockable one from Steve at S and S for reasonable money. It won't go walkies but it doesn't feel the same. (A bit stupid really since it's a 7V8 under the surface)

TD Fitchet were selling a NOS late filler cap on eBay. I think it went for £60.00 plus. Remember when the heater matrix seals were selling for similar money for the last ones. You'd think there should be plenty of s/h items off scrapped 7's knocking around.

I had a lockable one when I got the car but was concerned about only having one key and the possibility of rain leakage through the lock (not sure it would but kept it greased to fill the hole). Then a chance find on ebay came up with a standard one, seemed a lot for a plastic cap but nowhere near the price quoted above. Did a quick BIN and feel happier with it. So they do occasionally come up on there if you save the search.

My car has a S/S fuel cap from an old outboard motor fuel tank!

I will be keeping a look out for the ones on ebay.

However, is there now any direct replacements that people have used here, apart from an on-board motor one?

When we lost the one off the 8 we found the radiator cap from a XD Ford Falcon fitted.

1t looked dreadful but kept the rain out. Looking so bad did help motivate the search for a new one.

Some talk on this yesterday at the annual meet at Gaydon. Apparently there is a Sherpa fuel cap which is the same as the TR7 (non locking) ones, just has a red dot sticker on it for some reason but it peels off.

The red dot sticker was standard in the USA to indicate that unleaded fuel should be used.

Hi Phil
Have you managed to find a filler cap yet? I have three caps and a lockable one with a key.
Let me know if any are of interest to you
Cheers
