16" MG TF Alloys

Hi all
I have just been offered a set of four 16" MG alloys with 205 x 50R x16 tyres fitted, would these fit the 7or would they rub on the front wheel arches, at the moment I have 14" alloys with 195 x 60 tyres Just wondered if anybody on here has fitted
the 16" wheels on their cars.

I have fitted them but used a 10mm spacer to get them to sit out a little more as they looked to be too far in the arch.
I only had a slight rub on the front part of the wing at the bottom of the arch when in reverse so tweaked that bit a little.
Worth it in my opinion as they look great to me.

Not too sure if the wheels you mention would fit or not. My initial thought would be that they would, but I am sure someone else on here could confirm . With having 14 inch ones already on there my though is why go for the 16 inch ones? Upgraded breaks will fit on the 14 inch ones. Are tyres for them getting hard to find now or is it a bit of a new face look for the old girl

Check the off set (or ET) of the MGF wheels. The ET for standard TR7 wheels is 25 mm.

Bear in mind that;
• A wheel with a larger ET number sit further inside, thus narrowing the track.
• A smaller or negative ET will place the wheels further apart, widening the track.

Thanks all for the replies,JJ, if you used a thinner spacer would that stop the wheel rubbing on the wiheel arch?
Phil, 14" tyre range is becoming more limited and also the 16" wheels will improve the looks of the old beast
Beans, thanks for the info and advice about the offset, I am not sure what it is on the MG TF wheels and I assume that's why JJ used 10mm spacers on his 16" wheels.

For what it's worth, our cars suspension was designed to have the big bag of 13" wheels under it.

Most of my pleasure motoring is on less than perfect country roads, & some far from perfect back roads. On the country roads my 7, on it's 13s is a much nicer car to drive than the 8 on it's 15s. If I am going to be on those back roads, I don't even consider taking the 8. On the other hand, if I will be on good quality smooth grippy roads, the 8 is the choice.

Of course stiffer springs & shocks on the 8 have something to do with this, but those big bags of 13" soak up a lot of imperfections in the road.

My Honda S2000 is OK on the country roads on it's 16s, as it was designed to use them, but it is not a good car for those back roads.

I suggest anyone thinking about low profile tyres on a TR 7/8 think first about where they will use it. Sometimes what looks good is bloody awful in use. If you are going to the track, great, if going rallying, not a good idea.

For what it's worth it seems to depend on individual cars in my case. On 15" MGF wheels one of mine rubbed on a front bottom arch on 205/45 tyres before I modified it a bit, on another I run 205/50's with no problems. The funny part is that the 205/50 one used to rub very slightly with the 14" wheels it came on due to the van like tyres fitted! Hasbeen is correct though, the wheel/tyre size/ratio has a huge impact on the ride quality.

There is a reason why I stuck to 13" wheels on my DHC.
It's a car used for (long distance) trips across Europe. And very good at it
And there are decent options for brakes to fit inside!

It's a matter of taste of course but I think big wheels don't look good on a TR7 ...

Hi Moe

The MG 16" will fit no problem the Question is only the ET MG has original ET28.

The Tire is to high, you would need 205 / 45 / 16 as I had on my 7


At the rear wheels I had problems with scratches .. the wheel was to wide I guess 8 " 8.5" x16

I will change to 7.5x16 ET 20 or even to 15 "because of my back - get older

After the hassle I've had trying to get good quality 13 inch tyres I would consider moving to 15 inch if I saw a decent cheap set of wheels

I just go down to local tire supplier and order them and get them to install and balance them. I used their "house tire" which is Kumho. Not sure of their availability in Scotland (they're Korean) but easy to get here. Decent tire. Won last Paris - Dakar rally in buggy category, was supplier of tires to PNW NASCAR type racing series.

I saw the kumho ones on black circles when I gave up and looked online. I'd never heard of them but that's good to know they are decent.

I have Kumhos on the 7 too, recommended as pretty good by the local "sporty" tyre dealer. They are less sharp on turn in than the best Michelins which are no longer available in 13s, but once I got used to the soft turn in, I've found them to be every bit as good cornering performance wise, with similar grip.

Just research them a little, as they have some low drag, high fuel mileage types, & some long wearing types too. Their best are as good as the 15" Michelins on the 8, but much quieter, & more comfortable as well. I was very pleasantly surprised.

I have fitted the 16" wheels with 10 mm spacers, they look great, still get a slight rub now and again and trying to find the elusive problem.

What springs have you got on your car I have 200 lb uprated springs on mine,would standard springs give a bit more room?
Due to health problems I have not driven the car much in the last year but hoping to be driving it again soon especially with Drive it Day at the end of April.
Tried to put some photo's of the wheels on here but failed miserably so gave up .
