Oil in again

I have to change the washer on the sump plug, to stop a little oil leak I have.

The oil in the car has done about 100 miles (if that), so not old at all. I do not think it is worth trying to take the plug out, stop the oil leaking with my finger and then putting the plug in again (with new washer). So I was going to drain it out, change the washer, put sump plug back in and then fill the oil back up.

With the oil being new and clear I was thinking of putting it back in.

Would anyone do this or just put new stuff in?

If you clean the area about the sump properly first and then drain the oil into a scrupulously clean container, then I see no harm in it.

Should be fine to re-use. I would strain it through some old tights before putting it back in, just in case it brought any crap out of the sump when you drained it.

Straining oil seems the right approach.

For a couple of extra dollars I'd also replace the oil filter as you are going to be under the car and it gives you the chance to open up the old filter to see what the engine is depositing. (This assumes you have the old style cartridge rather than a modern spin on filter.)
