TR7 Automatic Gearbox Inhibitor Switch

Postby SDKeene » 13 Aug 2016 19:10

I have a 1977 TR7 with a Borg Warner 65 Automatic Gearbox. When we acquired the car, the inhibitor switch had been by-passed. The wiring harness was disconnected and the white/red wires were linked. We just replaced the inhibitor switch with the recommended part from Rimmer Bros. When we remove the jumper and connect the harness properly, the starter is disabled. We cannot decipher from the wiring diagram if the wires connected to the inhibitor switch are paired on the correct terminals. Does anyone have a photo or more detailed description so we can verify this? Also, are there any other checks to be made before connecting the harness back together? I'm suspecting the terminals in the harness may be corroded, but we have tried cleaning them and using dielectric grease. I have seen info on this forum about how to bypass the inhibitor, but I'm not seeing much on how to get a new one working properly. Would greatly appreciate any guidance!

Give Steve at S&S a ring - he's just rebuilding my ACG44A (the first RHD Auto)

Have you checked the operation of the switch of the car with a DMM?

It's been a long while since I last buggerised about with those old Borg Warner autos, but I don't think it matters which wire goes to which terminal as the switch just completes/interrupts the circuit to the starter according to the position of the shifter.
