Deja Vu

I went to my car club meeting last night (an hour's drive). Driving at the usual speed over the speed limit that everybody goes in the right lane (slow lane for you UK types), a Porsche 928 passed me on the left. I stepped on the accelerator and pulled over to the left to pull up behind him. We proceeded at a spritely rate as traffic allowed and I could imagine him wondering what this black car was that he couldn't shake. On approaching the Nanaimo bypass overpass he was in the fast lane but behind two commercial trucks so pulled over the the right slow lane and accelerated passed them as the trucks held him back as the speedo headed north of 70 mph on the overpass curve. Once on the bypass I noticed he had caught up and tucked in behind me where he stayed for the rest of the drive even though there was plenty of opportunity to pass if he wanted. It was like he wanted a better view of the car that had been dogging him, I would say he was in his thirties and his (presumably wife) was with him. It reminded me of the run I had in the mid 70's from Calgary to Victoria were a 240Z and my '71 Javelin were dicing it out on the #1 in the Fraser River Canyon (while still being safe), it sure makes the miles go by quickly. Except on that one when I came to a stop at the Tsawassen Ferry terminal, some one mentioned I take a look at the right rear and when I looked I had a bulge on the side of the tire like some one blowing a bubble with bubble gum. Now that was scary. I changed the tire before ferry loaded and that week it was off with the original Goodyear bias plies and on with a set of radial Uniroyals (the best/better tire for grip in that years Car & Driver's tire test).

Sounds like fun Spyder. Not impromptu like you, I was on the Triumph monthly club run on Sunday. We had about a dozen Triumphs, a TR2 & 3a, a couple of highly tuned TR6, 2 TR7s a couple of 8s, a Vitesse [2.0L 6 cylinder version of a Herald for the US brigade], a couple of spitfires, & assorted saloons. We had picked up an MG B, & a convertible Singer Gazelle, [an up market Hillman from the mid 60s], along the way, & they had joined the fun.

We used a narrow twisty back road through backblock farming country, & national park, which climbed up to the darling downs, a large tableland with extensive farming. We couldn't go too quick, the road is very twisty with lots of blind corners, & there were a few SUVs & quite a few motorbikes coming the other way.

The leader was one of the TR6s, with the other one on his tail. They were both surprised to find my 7 sitting right on their tail. They were very surprised at how well a stockish 7 can go. At one of the stops to let the slower drivers catch up, they wanted to know what I had don to mine, which is not very much. Stock SUs, & this one even still has the stock cast iron exhaust manifold.

We have a few of these great roads in the boarder ranges between Queensland & NSW, where you can have a lot of fun, without having to drive at licence threatening speeds.
