Unusual question ?

Bit of a strange request this one.
1. As far as i know i have a standard 5 speed gearbox in my car, and standard diff, is there tell tale ways to confirm this?
2. the speedo drive in my car is the standard cable drive, if i want to change that to electrical drive, is
it a case of just fitting a SPEEDO TRANSDUCER from a Rover sd1 to the gearbox to replace the cable drive?
If so how do i find out if it is a 22 teeth red, 23 teeth black, 20 teeth Orange etc that i need.?

Don't know if there is a standard for the gearbox/diff combination. The diff came in a few varieties with the 5 speed box. It could be a 3.9:1 if it is pre 1980. Or it could be a 3.45:1 if it is a later car. The way to tell is jack the car and look on the bottom of the diff housing. There will be a code etched. Don't mistake the raised numbers there for the code. The code is etched and you may have to use a wire brush before you can read it. The codes are CH and CL for 3.9 and 3.45 respectively.
Someone else will have to address your other questions since I have no idea.

It takes longer to jack up the can than it takes to pull out the gear and look at it (as I remember). A single bolt holds on the cable. Disconnect it and then the gear should bull right out.

As per Rob the gear is easy to pull out. Make sure the area is squeaky clean before removal and don't force things as there are O rings present.
As usual the parts book diagram on the Rimmer Bros website displays it better than I can describe it.

And be careful how you put it back together. I mashed up the end of the speedo cable when I didn't seat everything correctly before tightening up the bolt. The speedo was very erratic until I replaced the cable...........
