On Wednesday the wife and I will be taking probably our last trip on airline benefits; our son doesn't work for the airline anymore and the benefits will be ending soon. So we are planning to catch a plane to wherever we can. Currently the short list of flights with seats left are Glasgow, Manchester, Dublin and maybe Brussels. We won't know for sure until we are handed boarding passes and heading down the jetway. So much for being able to plan anything!

I'm hoping for Glasgow or Manchester, then head north. Are there any Wedge events, car shows or places I have to see while in the area? I was hoping to go past S&S, I've heard so many good things, but never had any dealings with them. Anywhere else?

How long are you over for?

About two weeks. I think we are going to head home around the 13th.

There is the Manchester Classic Car Show Sept 19 - 20 if you are still over here and before that, further south and east there is the TSCC Triumph Day at Duxford ( if you like planes then worth a visit anytime of the year ) on Sept 13th -

Glasgow it is; arrived yesterday with the last two seats available on the plane. A bit jet-lagged at the moment, but nice to be on the ground somewhere!

It's a shame your going home on the 13th
As you could have come along on the Bright Light City Run 19th Sept.

You people are all @#%^ nuts. We rented a car at the airport from a woman who spoke something almost resembling English. She realized we weren't understanding her and laughed then continued to speak some mixture of heavily accented Gaelic, English and probably Welch. Had not a clue; I think we actually bought the car, what with all the paperwork I signed. It's a little diesel Ford; not too bad, but don't know how I'll get it home to Seattle.

Spent a couple days in Glasgow where you are all driving on the wrong side of the road. I seem to be ok with that, except for shifting the gearbox on the wrong side. That is turning out to be difficult. We checked out some of town and last night I had the best lamb I may have ever tasted at some little place called the Butterfly and the Pig. Live music, good beer and friendly people too.

Today we looked at some Charles Rennie MacKintosh architecture, then drove out of town to Aberfoyle, around the Trossachs and to Cairndow, on our way up the coast and eventually to Oban, Fort Williams and Skye. Narrow winding roads that could be fun - if you people would stay on your side. I thought I was the one who would have problems with that, but a lot of the oncoming cars seem to be half way on my side of the road. Taking their half down the middle!

Just getting started, but it's been fun so far. I had big plans for covering a lot of distance here, but we may have to shorten that bit and just enjoy a smaller part in a little more detail.

A beautiful day for a drive today, so it seems like everyone had their classics out. Some great cars. No wedges yet, but on the way to Oban we had a squadron of 20-30 Morgan 3-wheeler's go by. Some of them came back through while we were checking out the town:


Ended up driving on to somewhere past Fort Williams for the night. Hopefully more good weather tomorrow too.

If you drive down the middle of the road you'll only be half wrong.

We made it home yesterday, after a great trip. I'm still a little off on time zones. We drove from Glasgow to Oban, then up to Isle of Skye, down to Inverness and Edinburgh, finally back to Glasgow and caught a flight to Dublin. Drove on to Galway, Dingle and back to Dublin for the flights home.

I must say there were some great places to visit, met some wonderful people, ate some really good food and drank a whole variety of beers (some good, some not so good). There was a traditional music festival going on in Dingle, so heard some great music too. The driving was a lot better after a day through the Trossachs; I don't know what was up with that, other than too many people on too small a road. Never had a problem anywhere else, including a lot of remote single track driving.

Never saw a wedge; the only Triumph was a dark blue Stag heading north on the A9 through the Cairngorms. On the way back to Dublin we ran across the Cannonball Ireland run; 170 Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Bentleys, Rolls, Porsche, McLaren et al, coming at us and zipping by. Great fun.
