What's the best product to use to remove this stuff from the engine bay without ruining the paintwork?

I just threw out a very old Waxoyl can from the garage which advises that it should be thinned down with white spirit for spraying.
Maybe have a go with a rag dipped in this in an inconspicuous area first and see how it goes It sounds like a horribly messy job though...........

I thin mine down with turpentine but don't know how it will affect paint. As they always put on labels, "test in inconspicuous spot".

[My engine bay is covered in the stuff, black and tatty looking. I found the best stuff to get it off was 'Engine Cleaner' that Lidl sell occasionally, but it was hard work and used a lot on the small area I did. I took a rest about 7 years ago and have never got around to finishing it. Be good to know if there is something that will remove it easily.

White spirit gets it off and should not affect the original paint.

Well I've bought some Auto Glym Engine & Machine cleaner as it states that is doesn't affect paintwork. I'll give it a go this weekend.
