Rear fog lights,

Just trying to get a few things ready for mot and the rear fog lamps don't work,Its a 3 position switch on the dash , so guessing its off/front/rear, but there are no front fogs fitted and two on the back, Ive checked all the fuses in the back of the glovebox and all look ok,
so any obvious place to start ? and where is the relay located? ( do fog lamps only come on if you have main beam on or do they just come on when you flick the switch, also if they don't work is it an m o t failure?
cheers :)

Rear fog lights only come on when headlight are on ( second position on the switch )

you are correct first position for front fogs

Hi,

I find I have to clean up the connections in the rear fog lamps before every MOT to ensure a pass. It's the metal tab that touches the base of the bulb and the base of the bulb itself that both need attention.

Hi,

IF your was used before 1st April 1980 not required by the MOT.

They have a habit of filling with water so would check that first as others have said.

Cheers John

I had the same problem with my lamps I found proving power to the wiring first,in the boot area, with a test lamp.buy a new safety lamp ,they don't call them fogs now.get your MOT and repair the old ones later. You only need the one .I think what fixed mine was cleaning the contact strip, take it apart ,so you clean both sides with an emery board.Test it on the battery before using the wiring loom .Also if it doesn't work rig up a separate earth.

just had a quick look, took the red covers off and took the 2 bulbs out , put them one at a time on my battery using my test lamp and wire and neither lit up, so thinking this is going to be an easy fix I then took my test light and checked inside the two bulb holders and neither side is live, so if both bulbs are blown ( both look fine when held up ) next guess is either the fuse ( if there is one ) or the switch,
next thing to do I guess is take the switch off and check power at the multi plug,

Just popped down the garage and undid the 2 screws holding on the switch facia and pulled it off, then pulled the fog lamp switch forward slightly and magaed to unplug the multi plug , only had a quick look but one of the wires was cut ( guessing for front fogs tho none on car so guessing that's why that wire was cut ) and using my light up tester I found the bottom right connection was always live and the bottom left became live when the car had main beam on, next time ill run a live to one of the other connections on the plug and see if I get a feed at the rear fogs.
does these sound like the switch ? and does the switch just pop out the holder with squeeze in lugs?
cheers

Just been messing with the fog lights and success !!!!!
What I did was test the multiplug and got 2 live feeds ( one perm and one when headlights on ) bottom left and right of plug, I then connected with my trusty screwdriver with light in a live to the other terminals and got the light on the switch ( warning light) to come on, so now im thinking the switch is faulty so start to look at switches on ebay and there is one on there forĀ£15 but in the description it says they come apart easily for cleaning furred up contacts, so I prised the switched apart and gave all metal parts including the contacts with sandpaper to get them back to shiny metal from green mildwey type covering, plugged it all back in and they work !!
but,
is there an easy way to put it all back together again with that green light strip and them 2 clips because every time I tried to put it together the clips either fall off, or it doesn't sit right, or one side lights up and the other doesn't, and the only time I got it all together again the foglight switch didn't light up so I must have caught the plug and had to start again but at least its almost ready for its mot .

sellotape was the answer for the light strip, so easy once you know how :)
