Lucas relays

These starter relays are ridiculously expensive. I wish someone would identify a cheaper relay by part number. I have seen cheaper relays and ordered one from VB but it did not work. I have been able to keep my relays working as I posted in the workshop section. But sooner or later I'm sure I will need new ones.

What makes this different to any other 5 pin relay?I have usually pulled relays from scrap cars when I visit a breakers,pay a few pounds and fit them as required and cannot remember one not working.Just curious,Steve..

They are different in which contacts close and which remain closed. For example, if you fit a 5 pin from the AC compressor to the starter, it will active the starter when you turn the key but when you release it the engine quits.

You just need to figure out which you need:

Closed when energised
or
Open when energised
or
There is another kind, called a changeover relay, that diverts the current from one terminal to the other when energised, it certainly won't be this type.


And what load rating in AMPs

Then take you old relay in to a proper parts shop and drop it on the counter and ask for: One of these, a closed/open when energised X AMP relay thanks.
Then before you hand over the drinking vouchers, check that it is actually the right one as often the 12 year old counter jumper either hasn't listened, doesn't have a clue or possibly even both!

Both types are readily available as generic items.

Reviving an old post, but I spend hours trying to solve a starting issue and it turned out to just be a bad starter relay.

Online they seem to be pretty expensive, so I wondered if anyone had tried the cheap alternative listed above?

I also had a starting issue that I could not seem to put my finger on. I changed a number of things including the starter motor and shcu like. It all helped and I am glad that I made the changes when I did. However, the item, when changed seemed to make the most impact was the starter relay. This little blue thing made such a difference when I changed it. The cost of 22 pounds from Robsport is not too bad, but the 74 dollars is a bit ott.
