wiper delay

Postby sonscar » 23 Jan 2015 08:57

I have seen for sale at many autojumbles Lucas wiper delay units for TR7. My car is 1980? DHC and does not have this. Do these units plug into the exisitng wiring or is the loom/wiring/stalk different for cars fitted with this.

Thanks Steve.

P.S used search and it seems there are many pitfalls with the correct unit and wiring. First hand experience would be nice.

Thanks again,
Steve..

They plug directly into the wiring loom.

No they dont. The delay unit forces a reversal of the connector gender in the interface where they fit into the 1980 harness.

Odd is right - all the units I have seen need both the loom plugs changed to the opposite gender where the loom from the wiper stalk meets the main loom under the dash. The delay unit plugs in at this connection. Apart from that it's a straight swap [:)]

Read this: http://www.team.net/TR8/tr8cca/wedgelab ... _delay.htm

Oh, the delay unit was mounted on some kind of bracket under the dash when factory installed, don't suppose it would be too hard to sort that out though.

I am not going to argue here, but ...
I have broken several late (LHD Euro spec 7's) they where all a straight swap.
Did have the problems you mention with a late US spec car [:p]

In my experience, all Lucas wiper systems are intermittent....... sometimes they work and sometimes they don't! [:D]

the needed alteration in the harness at the (harness?) factory. So '81 and '82 [yes, I know] model
year Wedges have the reversed gender connectors in place. And in the markets who didn't get
the delay gizmo - it's a straight-in fitment if you want one. All the earler models need to be 'adjusted'...

It is not a straight swap into a 1980 Canley built UK FHC.

Sorry to be an anorak but the delay unit (Lucas 6da) was made with two different type of connectors. One version has the connectors that we are familiar with (though may need the gender reversed depending on the year of car) and the other has a slightly different plug fitting, which looks a lot like ours, but is different. One could probably figure out the pin outs to connect it if desired and knowledgeable in such matters. The actual plug/socket though is extinct. The ones with the extinct connections are the ones that I have seen robsport selling on line for time to time.
