Wipers fault fixed

My wipers and the washers packed up on the new car which was annoying. They worked fine for the recent MOT then nothing when I needed them last week. Now I have had time for a look and found the problem so thought I would share it with you. You will laugh so best sit down.

It was just wipers and washers not working but everything else on the car worked fine (even the headlights go up and down on request). The symptoms pointed me towards the column switch being faulty and the pictures below show what I found.

The problem was caused by me tidying up the wiring with a cable tie and then the clamp bolt on the column had chopped the wiper switch tail when the steering turned. I thought I was being neat but all I did was to cause the problem.

You'd be surprised at how many new cars had that problem (wires under the dash) right from the factory. The only recall my '71 Javelin had. New car owners should be so lucky.

Made exactly the same mistake a few years ago with the same result only I did hear mine snap.

One of my 7s, just after I'd bought it had the column pick up the speedo cable, & start to wind it around itself. Fortunately there was enough extra resistance for me to realise something was wrong, & stop turning the wheel before checking & finding the problem.
