Leaf debris in demister vents

This question just popped up on the TR7/8 mailing list and it was something I have to do as well.
The demister vents just below the windscreen have quite a lot of leaf debris trapped against the mesh and it reduces the air flow quite a bit. Does anyone have a way of clearing it without taking the whole dash out? One suggestion is to blow the rubbish back down into the main heater body with an air line where it might be possible to reach with vacuum cleaner nozzle. Or maybe try to break it up with something like a welding rod whilst sucking with a vacuum nozzle.

The vent is in two halves, the bottom half goes into the heater. Pull this out and disengage from the top half. Clean out the debris and refit. It's more difficult to do on the passenger side.

I usually turn my fan on 'high' and just keep running a vaccume wand over the vents. Usually the leaves are dried out and crumble/get sucked up.

No screens in my '75 so I usually spend the time clearing the leafy bits out of my eye. [B)]

once you cleaned it, a piece of wire mesh over the intake on the bulkhead will prevent debris from getting into the heater box.

Yes I think that is a good idea. Why didn't I think of that before?

I think I just removed 1 of the screws that hold the demister in place then rotate the mesh and switched the fan on, had leafs in the car then but the mesh was clear [:)]

Another good idea, also sounds like the easiest, so guess which one I will try first.
