Saving the good bits off my old car I came across a couple of surprises in the doors.
First anyone seen this block of polystyrene before, it seems to be there to stop the window dropping too far?


Second, I often had a rattle from the window, this could be why. I found the felt runner in the bottom of both doors.

The runners were just friction fit. Both mine were in the bottom as well. I glued in the new ones.

Never seen white polystyrene in the door bottom before. Wonder if it was placed there at some stage to "hold in" filler whilst it dried?

I first thought it was to hold filler then realised it was exactly the same in both doors and appears to be some kind of stop to limit the window dropping.

I've been inside both my doors more times than I want to count; neither have the styrofoam block. But have had plenty of trouble with the felts sliding out of the tracks. Finally used silicone to glue them in place.

Actually had to pop my felts in a few months back once again ...never seen that block though

Their are two diff weren't size window felts available, and one does slide out very easily, the larger of the two available from Rimmers is a nice snug tight fit and I can't imagine it slipping at all.
I replaced mine a year ago and had one of each size sent (accidently) yes the smaller felt works but is far too loose.

Update: Just been battling to put a new window winder mechanism in the TR7 and remember now why I hate doors - because I always find them an absolute swine to do any work in, like the winders or felts etc. There is never quite enough space or there is something in the way.

Anyway, the reason for this update is I think I have found why there was a polystyrene block in the bottom of the doors on my old red TR7. I battled with the new winder gratefully following the very helpful guide by MikeRotherham in the Workshop Manual.

All went as well as expected and it went up and down fine but then the white roller that runs in the door guide came out of its track. This seems to have been because the window came down too low and the roller came out of the end.
Enter the polystyrene block in the bottom of the door and all is now perfect. The glass stops on the block before the white roller comes out. Not sure why it is necessary, maybe something is wrong or the winder mechanism is slightly different but its doing the job nicely.
