rear wings - yes or no

I bought this TR8 back in 1986 and it came with this wing. It was put on by a 20 yr. old kid that was the previous owner. I sold it in 1994 and then bought it back in 2010.

All the time this wing has been on the car, so is part of the car, but I still think it looks a bit juvenile.

Part of me wants to get rid of it but another part wants to keep it since its always been there since I've known the car.

What's your opinion about wings on wedges?

One of my 7s had a wing, it also had rust in the support pressing for the boot/trunk lid, from the water that had leaked past one of the wing bolts & pooled, when the car sat for some time.

To me those little wings on a 7/8 are just an affectation. With the shape of the car, they will not do anything at any speed a stock car could achieve. A wing on the back of the roof of a FHC may do something, but not enough to be worth the problems on a road car.

Another 7 had rust in the boot floor due to water leaking in past a luggage rack bolts.

On the other hand, if it is not leaking after all those years, why muck with it. As you say, it is now part of the car.

Hi,

IMHO and it is only that not mad on them <b>BUT</b> your car and if like it leave it, as my honourable friend Hasbeen point out it part of the history of the car and a period accessory of the time, the VW Beetle ladies and gents spend a fortune on period accessories for there car's.

Let me preface to say I am not anti wing. When I bought my '91 Integra I had the dealer pit on a wing as it looked better with it and only the top of the line GS model had it.

My '71 Javelin didn't have a wing and wouldn't have looked good with a wing but it had the air dam at the trailing edge of the roof that was an integral part of the design. That looked right.

The TR7 is a different story. They don't look good with wings and the only wing that looks right is the one on the Group 44 cars and it had to be huge before it made any difference according to wind tunnel and racing tests. So at highway speeds the difference of street wings is in the mind's eye.

Too rice racer for an English car.

To counter the above argument, just 'cause it's been on the car for a while doesn't make it look good.

But that's just me, since you asked.

Like some of the others I'm not mad about wings on a TR7, but with the top down (and the sun shining) it does looks quite nice.

I do like the colour coded wheels which I think works really well in white.

Agree, the wheels look good. Lose the wing.

Normally I would say nay to a rear wing as I haven't seen a tasteful one yet, however yours kinda suits it and I'm totally in agreement about the wheels and the colour, very cool!

I like the look of that one.

A comment heard from a man called Tom Matono (who was one of the designers on the early mx5 / miata projects)when looking at a really bad example at a car show was heard to reply:

"you can see why they call them spoilers!"
